Narrative

ON DEP FROM DFW WE WERE HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY WITH DATA LINK RECEPTION AND HAD TO MANUALLY LOAD THE FMS AT THE GATE; AND DURING TAXI THE FO ATTEMPTED TO OBTAIN THE LOAD CLOSEOUT VIA ACARS A COUPLE OF TIMES WHILE WE WERE ACCOMPLISHING THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. AS WE APCHED THE DEP END OF THE RWY; HE ASKED IF HE SHOULD INFORM THE TWR THAT WE WOULD NEED A FEW MINS AND I TOLD HIM TO HOLD ON; AS I THOUGHT THAT WE WOULD STILL HAVE TIME TO RECEIVE THE DATA AND FINISH THE CHKLIST BEFORE THE TWR WOULD BE READY FOR US. MEANWHILE; I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AS THE FO WAS PULLING DATA OUT OF THE ACARS PRINTER AND SHOWED ME A NEW TPS FOR RWY 18L WITH A WT 1000 LBS BELOW OUR PLANNED TKOF WT AND THE CURRENT TEMP AND UNDERSTOOD HIM TO SAY 'WE GOT IT' AS HE LOADED INFO INTO THE FMS AND TRC. I REVIEWED THE TKOF DATA ON THE NEW TPS AS BEING 'TEMP AND WTS GOOD AT 1000 LBS BELOW PLANNED; BUGS ARE RESET AT 131; 131 AND 135; 1.62 EPR FOR FLEX PWR FOR RWY 18L; SET AND XCHKED.' IT WASN'T UNTIL APPROX 20 MINS AFTER TKOF; IN A SUBSEQUENT CONVERSATION WITH THE FO; THAT I REALIZED THAT WE HAD NEVER RECEIVED A FINAL LOAD CLOSEOUT. AT THIS POINT I CONTACTED LOAD CTL; VIA RADIO; AND INQUIRED AS TO OUR PAX COUNT; ETC; AT WHICH WE WERE SENT AND RECEIVED A FINAL CLOSEOUT. IN RETROSPECT; I REALIZE THAT I PROBABLY RUSHED THE FO THROUGH THE FINAL CHKS AND SHOULD HAVE SIMPLY NOTIFIED THE TWR THAT WE WOULD BE DELAYED A FEW MINS. I WOULD NOT HAVE DEPARTED WITHOUT THE CLOSEOUT; BUT SOMEHOW ALLOWED THE NEW TPS TO TAKE THE PLACE OF THE CLOSEOUT AS I REVIEWED THE DATA. I THINK ESTABLISHING THE HABIT OF ACTUALLY HANDLING THE CLOSEOUT; AS OPPOSED TO HAVING THE FO'S HOLD AND REVIEW IT; WILL PREVENT THE MISUNDERSTANDING FROM OCCURRING AGAIN.
