FLC OF AN LTT TAXIED INTO A HANGAR WITH THE R WINGTIP RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE WINGTIP FAIRING AND THE NAV LIGHT DURING TAXI TO PARKING.
I WAS ASKED TO FILL IN FOR A PLT IN MIDLAND; TX; WHO WAS GOING ON VACATION. AFTER I ARRIVED I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ACFT WAS TO BE PARKED IN A DIFFERENT PLACE THAN NORMAL WHEN I RETURNED FROM THE THIRD FLT. I WAS ASSURED THE ACFT HAD BEEN PARKED THERE BEFORE AND MY FO SAID HE HAD DONE IT WITH THE REGULAR CAPT AND KNEW THE PROC. THE NEW PARKING LOCATION WAS IN A VERY TIGHT AREA THAT REQUIRED A 180 DEG TURN TO FACE THE ACFT OUTBOUND WITH A HANGAR ON ONE SIDE AND A GPU ON THE OTHER. AS WE TAXIED IN; I REQUESTED THAT THE FO KEEP A VERY SHARP WATCH ON HIS SIDE. THE FO SAID I HAD 15 FT CLRNC WITH THE HANGAR. I TAXIED FORWARD VERY SLOWLY AND WAS ABOUT TO BEGIN THE 180 DEG TURN WHEN I FELT A SLIGHT JOLT. I STOPPED THE ACFT RIGHT AWAY AND I ASKED THE FO WHAT THAT WAS AND HE SAID WE HAD STRUCK THE HANGAR. I INITIATED ENG SHUTDOWN; EXITED THE ACFT AND WENT TO THE R WINGTIP TO OBSERVE THAT IN FACT WE HAD STRUCK THE HANGAR; PUT A SLIGHT DENT IN IT AND KNOCKED OFF A NAV LIGHT AND CRACKED THE FIBERGLASS WINGTIP. I QUERIED THE FO AS TO WHAT HAPPENED AND HE SAID HE WAS DISTRACTED; BUT WASN'T ABLE TO SAY BY WHAT. THINGS I WOULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THIS WERE TO SHUT DOWN AN ENG AND SENT OUT THE FO TO ACT AS A GND GUIDE. I ALSO COULD HAVE LOOKED AT THE AREA BEFOREHAND ON FOOT AND ESTABLISHED A SAFE TAXI RTE.
