A C208 PLT ERRONEOUSLY NAVED INTO RESTR AIRSPACE WHILE USING INCORRECT INFO -- HE DID NOT RECOGNIZE THAT THE GPS NAV MODE HAD BEEN SELECTED. HE IMMEDIATELY TURNED AWAY FROM THE AIRSPACE; BUT THE UNAUTH PENETRATION WAS NOTICED BY THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR.
FLYING AN ACFT WITH NEWLY INSTALLED IFR CERTIFIED GPS; BUT ALSO HAD A COMPANY DIRECTIVE THAT THE SYS NOT BE USED BY PLTS UNTIL HAVING RECEIVED TRAINING ON THE SYS. SYS IS TIED INTO AVIONICS BUS SO IT IS OPERATIONAL WHEN PWR IS APPLIED TO BUS. THIS CAUSES GPS SYS TO INITIATE SELF TEST WHICH ILLUMINATES 3 SYS ANNUNCIATOR LIGHTS DIRECTLY BELOW THE HSI. I HAD FLOWN OTHER COMPANY ACFT WITH THE SYS AND SIMPLY DISREGARDED ANNUNCIATOR ILLUMINATION BECAUSE I HAD NOT BEEN TRAINED ON THE SYS. ONE ANNUNCIATOR; HOWEVER; INDICATES WHERE THE HSI IS RECEIVING NAV DATA FROM; EITHER NAV RADIOS OR GPS. I ASSUME THE LAST PLT TO FLY THE ACFT HAD SELECTED GPS MODE AND THE SYS POWERED UP TO WHATEVER WAS LAST SELECTED. ALTHOUGH THE CDI WAS SET CORRECTLY TO INTERCEPT V458 WBOUND FROM IPL VOR; THE GPS DATA SUPPLIED TO THE HSI PREVENTED SUCCESSFUL INTERCEPTION OF THE AIRWAY AND RESULTED IN A BRIEF INCURSION INTO R2510. AFTER CALLING ZLA TO PICK UP CLRNC TO ONT; CTR INFORMED ME CLRNC TO ONT WOULD BE ISSUED WHEN CLR OF R2510. THE INCURSION WAS BRIEF BECAUSE I DISCOVERED THE PROB BY XCHKING WITH NAV #2 (WHICH DOES NOT RECEIVE GPS). IMMEDIATELY INITIATED A MORE SOUTHERLY HEADING BACK TOWARD THE AIRWAY; AND SELECTED THE HSI NAV MODE BEFORE BEING INFORMED BY CTR OF THE PROB. I RECOMMEND A DIRECTIVE TO INSURE HSI NAV MODE IS SELECTED PRIOR TO DEP; UNTIL TRAINING ON THE SYS IS COMPLETED.
