Synopsis

PLT OF DECATHLON MAKES EMER LNDG AT PVT FIELD. AFTER ASSURING ENG PERFORMANCE OK HE MAKES 2 MORE TKOFS AND LNDGS.

Narrative

WHILE PRACTICING AEROBATICS; I ENCOUNTERED A ROUGH RUNNING ENG. I BEGAN A DSCNT FOR A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG TO A PVT HARD SURFACE RWY CLOSE TO THE PRACTICE AREA. I SWITCHED TO 121.9 AND MADE THE APPROPRIATE TFC CALLS. WHILE APCHING TO LAND I FELT CONFIDENT THAT MY ENG PROB WAS CAUSED WHILE FLYING INVERTED; AND MY AIRPLANE LACKED AN INVERTED FUEL SYS. I CONTINUED MY APCH AND LNDG ANYWAY. AFTER LNDG; I CHKED OUT THE ENG AND MAGNETOS; THEN TOOK OFF. NOT SATISFIED WITH THE QUALITY OF MY FIRST LNDG; I PRACTICED 2 MORE LNDGS FOR SAFETY REASONS. I THEN FLEW BACK TO MCCLELLAN PALOMAR ARPT; WHERE THE AIRPLANE IS BASED. UPON LNDG AT MCCLELLAN PALOMAR; I WAS SHOCKED AND STUNNED WHEN I WAS JUST ABOUT BEATEN UP BY AN IRATE TENANT OF THE PAUMA VALLEY ARPT. HE HAD FOLLOWED ME BACK TO HOME BASE IN HIS BONANZA AND PROCEEDED TO YELL AT ME AND THREATEN ME FOR LNDG AT HIS ARPT. I MADE NO EXCUSES AND SIMPLY TRIED TO SAY ANYTHING TO SETTLE HIM DOWN; TO NO AVAIL. I FELT THAT THE 2 ADDITIONAL LNDGS WERE WARRANTED FOR SAFETY REASONS; AND MAKE NO EXCUSES FOR PUTTING SAFETY FIRST. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THERE HAS BEEN NO FURTHER FOLLOWUP REGARDING THIS INCIDENT. HE ALSO STATED THE SECOND AND THIRD LNDGS WERE NOT TRULY SAFETY ORIENTED -- HE WANTED TO IMPROVE HIS SKILLS ON VERY SHORT FIELD LNDGS. ANALYST DISCUSSED THE MEANING OF PVT FIELD WITH RPTR AND HE SEEMS TO REALIZE THE ERROR OF HIS JUDGEMENT.
