Synopsis

FLC OF A FOKKER 100 FAILED TO REDUCE THEIR AIRSPD PER ARR STAR FIX AND SUBSEQUENTLY FAILED TO TURN TO ASSIGNED HDG AT THE NEXT STAR FIX.

Narrative

LOCATION: HOAGI INTXN ON CUGAR 5 AT IAH. FO LEG; DSNDING INTO IAH ON CUGAR 5 ARR AT IAH. WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS HOAGI AT 10000 FT WITH NO MENTION OF SPD. AFTER XING HOAGI AT 10000 FT AND A SPD OF 310 KTS; THE CTLR ASKED WHAT OUR SPD WAS. WE SAID 310 KTS; AND HE REPLIED WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT 250 KTS AT HOAGI. WE FELT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD US TO CROSS HOAGI AT 10000 FT AND 250 KTS. WE SLOWED TO 250 KTS AND WERE CLRED TO 6000 FT AND 085 DEG HDG AT BANTY. WE DSNDED TO 6000 FT DOING THE CHKLIST AND IDENTING THE ILS AND BRIEFLY DISCUSSED OUR MISSED SPD RESTR AT HOAGI. WE THEN FLEW PAST BANTY BY 2 MI AND WERE JUST INITIATING OUR TURN TO 085 DEG HDG WHEN APCH CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE IN THE TURN. THE REST OF THE APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL. IN RETROSPECT WE WERE BOTH TIRED AFTER A LONG DAY AND THEN WE SUBCONSCIOUSLY FRETTED ABOUT THE MISSED SPD AT HOAGI AND THAT WAS A LARGE PART OF THE REASON THAT WE FAILED TO TURN TO 085 DEGS OVER BANTY. THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED IS: DON'T DWELL ON A PAST MISCUE -- IT MIGHT CAUSE YOU TO MAKE ANOTHER MISTAKE.
