Synopsis

LNDG GEAR OF A BEECH 18 COLLAPSED DURING LNDG ROLLOUT DUE TO ONE OF THE RETRACT CHAINS BRAKING IN THE LNDG GEAR RETRACT MECHANISM.

Narrative

ACFT; BEECH 18; WAS PURCHASED FROM AN INDIVIDUAL IN WRANGELL; AK. THE ACFT HAD BEEN PARKED IN SEVERE WX CONDITIONS FOR THE PAST 7 YRS. I INSPECTED THE ACFT AND DETERMINED IT TO BE IN FERRY CONDITION; AND NOTED THAT IN THE ACFT MAINT RECORDS. I WAS UNABLE TO RETRACT THE GEAR DUE TO NO JACKS BEING AVAILABLE IN WRANGELL. I TEST FLEW THE ACFT AND RETRACTED AND EXTENDED THE LNDG GEAR PRIOR TO DEPARTING WRANGELL FOR SEATTLE. THE GEAR PERFORMED NORMALLY. 4 ADDITIONAL LNDGS WERE ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE GEAR SYS OPERATING NORMALLY. THE FINAL LNDG WAS PERFORMED AT THE DEST ARPT; CHANDLER MUNICIPAL ARPT; CHANDLER; AZ. THE LNDG GEAR WAS EXTENDED ON DOWNWIND AND APPEARED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. AFTER TOUCHDOWN AND APPROX 2000 FT OF ROLLOUT; AS I WAS LOWERING THE TAIL AND APPLYING LIGHT BRAKING; THE L GEAR COLLAPSED; FOLLOWED IN APPROX 2 SECONDS BY THE R GEAR. THE ACFT SLID TO A STOP ON THE MAIN WHEELS AND THE LOWER ENG COWLINGS. THE GEAR DOWN GREEN INDICATOR LIGHT WAS ON PRIOR TO LNDG. UPON EXAMINATION; I FOUND THE L RETRACT CHAIN BROKEN WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE SLIDE MECHANISM. I CAN'T BE SURE THAT I WOULD HAVE FOUND ANY DAMAGE TO THE RETRACT CHAIN HAD I HAD THE EQUIP TO JACK THE ACFT.
