Synopsis

2 SMA'S HAD AN NMAC IN THE SLN TFC PATTERN. THE RPTR WAS NORDO. ACFT EQUIP PROB RADIO FAILURE FROM UNK CAUSE.

Narrative

I DEPARTED SALINA WITH A STUDENT TO A LCL PRACTICE AREA. ON OUR WAY BACK IN; WE ATTEMPTED TO GET ATIS INFO; BUT COULDN'T HEAR IT. WE THEN TRIED TO JUST CALL THE TWR. WE REALIZED THERE WAS A PROB WITH THE RADIO; WE COLD NOT HEAR OR BROADCAST ANYTHING. I THEN ATTEMPTED TO TROUBLESHOOT. I COULDN'T GET THE RADIO TO WORK; SO I DECIDED TO HEAD BACK TOWARD THE ARPT WHILE BROADCASTING IN THE BLIND. AS I APCHED THE ARPT; I STARTED SQUAWKING 7600. WHEN I REACHED THE ARPT; I REMAINED OUTSIDE OF THE TFC PATTERN AND LOOKED FOR LIGHT GUN SIGNALS. I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY LIGHT SIGNALS; SO I TRIED TO CAREFULLY ENTER THE PATTERN ON DOWNWIND WHILE STILL ROCKING MY WINGS. I SAW ONLY 1 AIRPLANE IN THE PATTERN. AS I TURNED BASE; I GUESS I JUST MISSED ANOTHER AIRPLANE IN A PATTERN FOR RWY 12. NOT KNOWING THIS; I CONTINUED IN THE PATTERN TO FINAL. ON FINAL; I DSNDED FOR A LOW APCH OVER THE RWY IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE TWR'S ATTN. AFTER THE FLT; TWR TOLD ME TO CALL THEM. I CALLED AND THEY TOLD ME ABOUT THE NEAR MISS.
