AN ACR FLC DAMAGED THE L WINGTIP LIGHTS OF THE ACFT WHEN THEY WERE MAKING CORRECTIONS TO ALIGN WITH THE RWY CTRLINE; DURING FLT BELOW THE MDA; ON AN ASR APCH. THE CAPT (PF) MISSED THE APCH WHEN IT APPEARED THAT VALUABLE RWY MIGHT BE WASTED BY THE TIME THAT THE ACFT WAS STABILIZED ON CTRLINE. ANOTHER APCH WAS ATTEMPTED; AND ALSO MISSED. THE RWY HAD BEEN SHORTENED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY.
AN ASR APCH WAS ATTEMPTED AT THE GRR ARPT. THAT APCH WAS BEING USED DUE TO RWY WORK DISABLING THE ILS. THIS WORK ALSO SHORTENED THE RWY TO 5750 FT. THE WX WAS 400 FT OVCST AND 2 MI VISIBILITY. THE CTLR VECTORED US ON TO FINAL APCH. THE WX WAS ABOVE MINIMUMS FOR THIS APCH. THE CTLR DSNDED US TO OUR MDA. PRIOR TO THE MISSED APCH POINT THE APCH LIGHTS AND THEN THE RWY CAME INTO VIEW. THE AIRPLANE WAS ABOUT 2 AIRPLANE WIDTHS TO THE L OF CTRLINE. THE CAPT AT THE CTLS BEGAN A R TURN AND BEGAN A DSCNT FOR THE RWY. THE R TURN WAS THEN FOLLOWED BY A L TURN TO ALIGN WITH THE RWY. AFTER THE L TURN WAS STARTED THE CAPT DID NOT LIKE THIS SIT AND EXECUTED A GAR. BECAUSE OF THE SHORT RWY; IT APPEARED BY THE TIME WE WOULD GET THE ACFT ALIGNED PROPERLY WE WOULD WASTE VALUABLE RWY. AS THE CAPT PITCHED UP AND ADDED PWR A SMALL BUMP WAS FELT -- AS THOUGH THE L MAIN TIRE HAD TOUCHED THE RWY. WE ATTEMPTED ANOTHER APCH AND WE NEVER LEFT MDA BECAUSE OF RWY ALIGNMENT. WE WENT BACK TO DTW WHERE WE FOUND THE L LNDG LIGHT CRACKED AND THE L WINGTIP LIGHT LENS WAS ALSO CRACKED BUT THE BULB WAS INTACT.
