A PIPER ARCHER II PLT THINKS THAT STRAIGHT-IN APCHS TO UNCTLED ARPTS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. HE DID ONE AND HAD SOMEONE MAKING A NORMAL PATTERN ALMOST LAND ON TOP OF HIM. NMAC. EVASIVE ACTION GAR (Y).
WE (FLT INSTRUCTOR AND ME) SWITCHED TO UNICOM (122.7) AND ANNOUNCED OUR POS APPROX EVERY MI ON APPROX A 3-4 MI STRAIGHT-IN APCH. ON FINAL; WE HEARD A PLANE JUST DEPARTED ANNOUNCING XWIND; VERIFYING WE WERE ON THE CORRECT FREQ. WE HEARD AND SAW NO OTHER PLANES DESPITE CONCENTRATED LOOKING AND DISCUSSION ABOUT LOOKING. ON ROLLOUT; THE BI-WING PASSED US ON GAR. UPON DISCUSSION ON GND WITH OTHER PLT; WE LEARNED HE WAS ABOVE AND BEHIND US ON FINAL FROM A TIGHT CLOSED TFC ENTRY (HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT GLIDE DISTANCE TO THE RWY IN THE BIPLANE) AND TOOK PROPER AND NORMAL EVASIVE ACTION (GAR) UPON SEEING US ON THE RWY. HE CLAIMED TO HAVE ANNOUNC ED HIS POS; BUT WE HEARD NO COM FROM HIM AND HE SAID HE DIDN'T HEAR US. HE DID NOT SEE US UNTIL ON SHORT FINAL AND WE NEVER SAW HIM. WE BECAME TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON HIM SEEING US -- A DANGEROUS SIT. IT IS THE FIRST STRAIGHT-IN APCH I HAVE DONE AT 00V (AND THE LAST). STRAIGHT-IN APCHS AT UNCTLED ARPTS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. BECAUSE OF THE RADIO PROBS; IT IS ADVISABLE TO SET THE RADIO AND THEN VERIFY IT IS SET RIGHT.
