Synopsis

AN ACR SA227 TAXIING TO THE RAMP HAD A CLOSE CALL WITH AN ACR MD88 CLRING THE RWY ON A HIGH SPD TXWY. SA227 LIGHTING WAS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR.

Narrative

AFTER LNDG ON RWY 35 AT MCO; TWR REQUESTED MINIMUM TIME ON RWY DUE TO ONE DEP AND ONE ARR ON FINAL. WE CLRED THE RWY AT H-7 AND CALLED GND CTL. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO THE RAMP. DEP TFC WAS TAXIING S ON TXWY G SO WE TURNED N ON TXWY H TO PROCEED TO H-3 TO ENTER THE RAMP. WE ACCOMPLISHED THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST WHILE TAXIING AND APCHING H-5 AND ABOUT TO CROSS IT; I SPOTTED AN ACR Y MD88 EXITING THE RWY ONTO H-5 AT A GOOD RATE OF SPD AND IT APPEARED AS THOUGH HE DIDN'T SEE US AND WOULD NOT STOP. I APPLIED MAX BRAKE AND REVERSE AND STOPPED WITH THE NOSE OF MY ACFT JUST SHY OF H-5. BY THIS TIME ACR Y SPOTTED US AND ALSO APPLIED MAX BRAKE; STOPPING WITH HIS NOSE JUST SHY OF TXWY H. HE REMARKED TO GND 'WHERE DID SA227 COME FROM?' I HELD POS AND TOLD HIM 'GO AHEAD; ACR Y' SO HE COULD FULLY CLR THE RWY; I THEN PROCEEDED TO MY GATE VIA TXWY H AND H-3. FORTUNATELY; ACFT TO ACFT CONTACT WAS AVOIDED BY QUICK REACTION. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) WE WERE OFF GND FREQ AND COULD NOT MONITOR APCH AND LNDG ACTIVITY ON TWR FREQ; 2) FO ACCOMPLISHING CHKLIST WAS DISTRACTED FROM OBSERVATION TO R AND BEHIND OUR ACFT; AND THE MD88 CAME INTO MY VIEW. THROUGH FO'S R WINDOW AT THE LAST MIN; ONLY QUICK REACTION ENABLED US TO STOP; AND 3) HOTEL-5 HIGH SPD TXWY FROM RWY 35 IS AN APPARENT BLIND SPOT FROM ORLANDO'S CTL TWR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 353341: A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE LACK OF MORE SUITABLE NIGHT ILLUMINATION OF ALL SMALLER ACFT (IE; TAIL WHITE FLOOD LIGHTS) MAKES OUR SA227 HARD TO SEE FROM THE REAR; IE; SA227 INCIDENT AT LAX.
