PLT OF A MOONEY 201 REQUESTED A FLT ASSIST FROM ARTCC DUE TO LOW FUEL AND A ROUGH ENG CAUSED BY INDUCTION ICING. HE WAS DIVERTED TO THE NEAREST ARPT WHERE A SUCCESSFUL LNDG WAS MADE. AFTER THE ACFT WAS REFUELED IT REVEALED THAT THE ACFT ONLY HAD APPROX PT 6 GALS OF USABLE FUEL LEFT.
ENRTE THE ENG STARTED RUNNING ROUGH WITH THE EGT AT 700 DEGS C. I ENRICHED THE MIXTURE UNTIL THE ENG SMOOTHED OUT. SINCE THE ENG HAD LESS THAN 50 HRS ON IT; I FIGURED MY NORMAL EGT SETTING HAD CHANGED. 5 HRS AND 25 MINS INTO THE FLT THE L TANK RAN OUT OF GAS. I INFORMED ZDV OF THIS AND THAT I HAD ABOUT 30 MINS OF GAS IN THE R TANK. ZDV HANDED ME OFF TO SPRINGS APCH AND BASED UPON HEADWINDS; WE DECIDED THAT LNDG AT PUEBLO WOULD WORK OUT BEST. THEY HANDED ME OFF TO PUEBLO APCH WHO RADAR VECTORED ME TO AN ILS RWY 8L APCH. I BROKE THROUGH THE CLOUDS ABOUT 1000 FT AGL AND RPTED THE FIELD IN SIGHT; LANDED AND TAXIED TO FUEL. THE R TANK TOOK 32.4 GALS AND THE L 33.0 GALS. CERTAINLY NOT MORE THAN 10 MINS OF FUEL. I HAD TAKEN OFF WITH 6 HRS AND 45 MINS OF THE FUEL AND WOULD HAVE RAN OUT OF GAS AFTER 5 HRS AND 55 MINS. AFTER REFUELING I FLEW ON TO COLORADO SPRINGS AND THE ENG RAN FINE WITH THE EGT AT 700 DEGS C. I TALKED TO A MECH AT COLORADO SPRINGS AND HE SAID I HAD INDUCTION ICING. THIS IS MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH INDUCTION ICING. THE NEXT TIME I ENCOUNTER INDUCTION ICING I WILL RECOGNIZE IT AND TAKE THE APPROPRIATE ACTION. JUST AS A POINT OF REF; THE L FUEL GAUGE SHOWED A LITTLE LESS THAN 1/2 A TANK WHEN IT WENT DRY. IT WAS A GOOD THING I WAS TIMING THE TANKS IT ALLOWED ME TO ESTIMATE MY FUEL REMAINING INDEPENDENT OF THE GAUGES.
