ACFT EQUIP PROB. UNSAFE LNDG GEAR INDICATION. JAMMED DOWN-LOCK SPRING DISCOVERED AFTER LNDG. COM WITH COMPANY MAINT DETERMINED A NORMAL LNDG COULD BE MADE.

Narrative

ON FINAL APCH TO BTV. I SELECTED GEAR DOWN. WE RECEIVED A R MAIN GEAR UNSAFE INDICATION. WE PROCEEDED WITH THE GEAR UNSAFE CHKLIST AND PROCS. THERE WAS STILL AN UNSAFE INDICATION. BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE EMER LNDG CHKLIST; THE CAPT SUGGESTED WE CONTACT MAINT TO DISCUSS POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES AND I AGREED. I TOOK THE CTLS AND MONITORED TWR FREQ WHILE THE CAPT SPOKE WITH MAINT OVER #2 RADIO. AFTER A SHORT TIME THE CAPT ADVISED ME THAT BASED ON HIS DISCUSSION WITH MAINT; THEIR DECISION WAS THAT THE GEAR WAS SAFE. HE EXPLAINED THAT THEIR DECISION WAS BASED ON THE ABSENCE OF A CONFIGN WARNING WITH FLAPS 20 DEGS; AND THE HYD PUMP HAD SHUT OFF. THEREFORE THE CAPT DID NOT FEEL IT WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE AN EMER LNDG. I AGREED BASED ON THE CAPT'S REPUTATION AND EXPERIENCE. A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER; UPON VISUAL INSPECTION; THE DOWN LOCK WAS JAMMED BY A BROKEN SPRING RENDERING IT UNSAFE. THE FACTORS THAT HAD AFFECTED THE DISCONTINUATION OF THE CHKLIST AND TO MAKE A NORMAL LNDG WAS THE INADEQUATE INFO FROM MAINT. THE REASONS GIVEN BY MAINT WERE FAR FROM CORRECT. HOWEVER; THE CHKLIST WAS CORRECT.
