Synopsis

P51 FLOWN AND LANDED 7 MINS AFTER OFFICIAL SUNSET WITH R WING AND TAIL NAV LIGHTS INOP. PLT HAD PLANNED ON BEING BACK PRIOR TO SUNSET.

Narrative

FLYING IN A PA51D; PARTICIPATED IN A FORMATION FLT OF 2 WITH A B25J FOR A QUICK PHOTO OPPORTUNITY AT THE CONCLUSION OF A FLT DISPLAY. FLT TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED AND WE LANDED APPROX PM10L. AFTER TAXI-IN TO THE RAMP AND SHUTDOWN; A GND CREW MEMBER POINTED OUT THAT MY R WING AND TAIL NAV LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING WITH THE L WING/RED NAV WORKING NORMALLY. A CHK OF THE BULBS TURNED UP THE TAIL LIGHT ON THE RUDDER LOOSE IN SOCKET; WORKED NORMAL AFTER ADJUSTMENT. R NAV BULB BURNED OUT AND CHANGED -- NORMAL OPS. I HAD NOT PREFLTED THE NAV LIGHTS PRIOR TO FLYING; AS I EXPECTED TO RETURN PRIOR TO SUNSET OF APPROX PM03L. ON RETURN TO CNO ARPT; THE LEAD ACFT IN OUR FLT TURNED ON HIS LIGHTS AT WHICH TIME I ALSO TURNED MY NAV LIGHTS ON AND WE WERE IN SUNLIGHT; BUT THE CNO ARPT; IN A VALLEY; HAD THE RWY LIGHTS ON AS WE ARRIVED FOR THE OVERHEAD APCH. I HAD OBSERVED THIS ACFT FLYING THE PREVIOUS DAY AND TAXIING IN APPROX PM00L WITH ALL NAV LIGHTS ON. THE ACFT LOGGED SEVERAL FLTS. DURING THE DAY PRIOR TO MY LATE AFTERNOON FLT APPARENTLY SHOCK AND VIBRATION FROM THE SEVERAL FLTS OPERATED RENDERED THE 2 LIGHTS INOP. ANY FLT CLOSE TO OFFICIAL SUNSET WILL INCLUDE A FULL PREFLT OF NAV AND LNDG LIGHTS BEFORE I FLY.
