INSTRUCTOR PLT WITH STUDENT FLYING A PA28-161 LANDS AT A FIELD WHICH WAS NOTAMED CLOSED.
THE PVT PLT STUDENT AND I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON XCOUNTRY FLYING OVER THE PAST FEW WKS. HE HAS DONE A SOLO XCOUNTRY; BUT I WANTED TO WORK WITH HIM ON HIS DIVERSION SKILLS. WE PLANNED A XCOUNTRY FLT FROM FCM TO ST CLOUD; MN. WE DID ALL THE PLANNING THAT IS REQUIRED FOR A NORMAL XCOUNTRY FLT; EXCEPT CHK THE NOTAMS FOR ARPTS THAT COULD BE USED FOR A DIVERSION. AFTER GETTING ON COURSE; WE WORKED WITH HIS GND SPD CHKS AND HIS NAV. I DECIDED TO WORK ON HIS SOFT FIELDS; ALONG WITH XWIND LNDGS; SO I CHOSE 10D. 10D IS NORMALLY A WELL GROOMED; GRASS FIELD THAT RUNS E/W. THE WIND WAS OUT OF THE N; NORMALLY 10D IS PRETTY QUIET. AS WE ENTERED THE TFC PATTERN; WE FLEW OVER AT 1500 FT AGL AND LOOKED FOR ANY X'S AT THE END OF THE RWY; SIGNIFYING A CLOSED RWY. THERE WERE NO X'S AND THE FIELD LOOKED DAMP BUT STILL IN GOOD SHAPE. WE THEN DSNDED TO ENTER THE PATTERN AND LAND. WE LANDED AND WE WERE GOING TO REMAIN IN THE PATTERN; BUT SOMEONE INFORMED US THAT THE ARPT WAS CLOSED. WE LEFT THE AREA AND DISCUSSED WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE DONE. WE LEARNED FROM OUR MISTAKE. UPON REACHING FCM; I PULLED UP THE NOTAMS ON THE COMPUTER FOR 10D; AND I FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR A WHILE. I DID MAKE A MISTAKE; BUT I HAVE CHANGED THINGS IN MY FLYING; AND HOPEFULLY IN THAT OF OTHERS; TO HELP THE FUTURE OF AVIATION. I HAVE MADE A GOOD EFFORT TO PLAN MY STUDENT'S DIVERSION FLT WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CURRENT NOTAMS FOR ANY ARPT IN THE AREA. ON A DIVERSION; I NOW HAVE THE STUDENT CALL FSS AND CHK TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY CURRENT NOTAMS FOR THE ARPT OF INTENDED USE. I ALSO HAVE BEEN STRESSING TO THE STUDENTS THAT THEY NEED TO BE MORE AWARE OF THE NOTAMS. I HAVE ALSO TRIED TO INFORM THEM OF THE SITS THAT CAUSE NOTAMS TO BE PUBLISHED. I KNOW THAT I MADE A MISTAKE; BUT I THINK THAT BECAUSE I SCREWED UP I HAVE LEARNED. I HAVE CHANGED MY WAYS OF FLYING AND OF TEACHING TO MAKE AVIATION SAFER. I WILL CONTINUE TO STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF NOTAMS WITH THE FUTURE STUDENTS I HAVE AND WITH THE ONES THAT I EVALUATE ON STAGE CHKS.
