Synopsis

BE76 PLT USING LORAN FOR NAV FLEW INTO AN ACTIVE MOA. NO CONFLICT; BUT CTR WAS TRYING TO CONTACT HIM. SOME PROB WITH RADIO RECEPTION.

Narrative

IN CRUISE; USING VFR FLT FOLLOWING; FLYING DIRECT TO A FIX 300 NM AWAY USING LORAN; I INADVERTENTLY FLEW INTO AN ACTIVE RESTR AREA. I HAD THE VOLUME ON THE RADIO TURNED LOW (ALTHOUGH I BELIEVE IT WAS STILL AT AN AUDIBLE LEVEL). AFTER NOT HEARING RADIO CHATTER FOR A WHILE; I CALLED CTR AND WAS INFORMED THAT I WAS IN A HOT RESTR AREA. CTR SAID THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO CONTACT ME BUT HAD BEEN UNABLE. I DID EXPERIENCE SEVERAL OTHER PROBS WITH RECEPTION ON THAT RADIO SUBSEQUENTLY AND WOUND UP USING COM #2. I CLBED TO 11500 FT TO GET OUT OF THE AREA. I HAD BECOME COMPLACENT ABOUT FOLLOWING MY POS ON THE CHARTS; KNOWING CTR WOULD HELP KEEP ME CLR OF RESTR AREAS. SHOULD HAVE TRACKED POS MORE CLOSELY WITHOUT RELYING ON ATC. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES HE IS AWARE OF THE IMPENDING SHUTDOWN OF LORAN AND OMEGA NAV SYS BUT THIS IS WHAT HE HAS TO USE UNTIL THAT TIME. IT APPEARS THE AREA HE SPEAKS OF IS AN MOA W OF MHK VOR; BUT IT WAS HOT. HE DOES NOT DENY IT WAS HIS ERROR. NO FAA FOLLOW UP AT THIS POINT.
