Synopsis

A B737-300 WAS RETURNED TO SVC IN AUTOLAND STATUS AFTER AUTOPLT WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH INCOMPLETE OPERATIONAL TESTING.

Narrative

ACR ACFT ZZZ ARRIVED ARPT GATE YY APR/XA/97 A FEW MINS BEFORE XA00 WITH A FO'S AIRSPD BUG DISCREPANCY AND REQUIRING A DAILY CHK. WHEN THE CHK WAS COMPLETE; A REVIEW OF THE ACFT LOG REVEALED A HISTORY OF FO AIRSPD PROBS AND THE INST WAS REPLACED APR/XB/97. A PHONE CALL WAS PLACED TO AVIONICS TECH DESK; A DECISION WAS MADE TO CHANGE THE FLT CTL COMPUTER 'B'; BUT THE COMPUTER (PARTS) SHOWED THE FLT CTL COMPUTER PART NUMBER IN TRANSIT. A CALL WAS MADE TO STORES WHO CONFIRMED PART NUMBER WAS NOT ON SHELF. 10 MINS LATER; STORES CALLED; FLT CTL COMPUTER WAS FOUND. I REPLACED THE FLT CTL COMPUTER 'B' IN THE ACFT; PERFORMED BITE THROUGH THE FMC FOR 'A' AND 'B' AND THEN 'B' CHANNEL ALONE -- ALL PASSED. I DID NOT REMOVE ACFT ZZZ FROM CAT IIIA STATUS AS REQUIRED BY ACR PROCS MANUAL. ACFT THEN DEPARTED FOR A NON MAINT DEST IN XXX; THE FLEW TO ZZZ; A MAINT STATION WHERE IT WAS REMOVED FROM CAT IIIA STATUS. I DISCOVERED MY DISCREPANCY APR/XC/97 WHILE CHKING THE MAINT COMPUTERS ACFT ZZZ HISTORY OF AIRSPD WRITE-UPS. I THEN CALLED THE AVIONIC TECH DESK ABOUT THE CAT IIIA DISCREPANCY.
