DC10 CAPT'S RPT ON AN EXHAUSTING APCH INTO LAX WITH NUMEROUS HEADING CHANGES AND ALT ADJUSTMENTS FOR TFC SEPARATION DURING APCH.

Narrative

FLT; DC10; DTW-LAX ON ARR TO LAX; DSNDING ON CIVET ARR; THEN CLRED TO INTERCEPT RWY 25L LOC TO DSND TO 3500 FT. WE WERE ADVISED TO SLOW TO VARIOUS SPDS; WHICH REQUIRED CONFIGN AT A DISTANCE FARTHER THAN NORMAL FROM RWY. WERE TOLD WE WERE OVERTAKING SLOWER ACFT; BUT NOT THE TYPE. RADIO CHATTER FROM AND TO LAX APCH WAS VERY BUSY. WE CONTINUED TO OVERTAKE THE TFC; AND WAS THEN TOLD TO LEVEL OFF AT 5000 FT AND TURN TO HDG 200 DEGS FROM APPROX 270 DEGS; THEN AFTER A WHILE; TO TURN TO HDG 340 DEGS; ABOUT LOC (RWY 25L). AS NEEDLES CTRED; WE WERE TOLD TO INTERCEPT RWY 25L LOC; WHICH REQUIRED AN ALMOST 90 DEG TURN; WHICH WAS TOO MUCH AT THAT PROX TO LOC. NO INTERMEDIATE TURNS WERE GIVEN. WE WERE THEN GIVEN CLRNC FOR THE APCH ONCE ESTABLISHED; AND DSCNT WAS STARTED FROM 5000 FT; WE RECEIVED A TCASII ADVISORY AND WAS TOLD BY APCH TO CLB BACK TO 3500 FT; WHICH WE PROMPTLY EXECUTED; THEN RECLRED FROM INSIDE THE FAF TO LAND ON RWY 25L. NO TCASII RESOLUTION WAS GIVEN; ONLY ADVISORY. NO FURTHER DIRECTIONS FROM APCH CTL; WAS RELEASED TO LAX TWR AND LNDG COMPLETED. WHILE ON APCH; BEFORE OFF COURSE VECTOR WE WERE ADVISED THAT WE SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR A GAR DUE TO OVERTAKING SPD; RELATIVE TO ACFT AHEAD OF US.
