Synopsis

SMA ACFT LNDG. XWIND AND GUSTS CONTRIBUTED TO RPTR PLT LOSING CTL OF ACFT; HITTING WINGTIP AND PROP.

Narrative

I WAS RETURNING TO MY HOME ARPT WITH A PAX (FRIEND) AFTER A SHORT TRIP TO INDIANA. WINDS THAT DAY WERE STRONG (GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 20 KTS) WITH GUSTS TO 30 KTS. UNICOM RPTED THE SAME AND SAID ACFT WERE USING RWY 4 (GRASS) AND RWY 12 (CONCRETE). WINDS WERE RPTED NE TO E. WIND SOCK APPEARED AS DIRECT XWIND RWY 12. SINCE I HAD PREVIOUSLY DEPARTED ON THE GRASS; AND DIDN'T WANT TO CHALLENGE THE GEAR ANYMORE; I OPTED FOR RWY 12. THE FINAL APCH WAS CHALLENGING; BUT CTLED. ON ROLLOUT AFTER LNDG; A SUDDEN GUST CAUGHT THE L WING AND TAIL LIFTING BOTH. THE R WINGTIP AND PROP TIPS STRUCK THE RWY BEFORE I COULD RIGHT THE ACFT. AFTER DOING SO; I USED THE NOSEWHEEL TO STEER THE ACFT ONTO THE GRASS AND OFF THE RWY. A C310 ON FINAL 1/2 HR LATER ON THE SAME RWY WENT AROUND AND OPTED FOR RWY 4. I SHOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME. FACTORS: 1) JUDGEMENT -- I EXCEEDED BOTH THE ACFT AND MY OWN LIMITS. 2) HOLDING THE L AILERON DOWN MORE ON ROLLOUT MAY HAVE AVOIDED SOME OF THIS. 3) SHOULD HAVE LANDED ON RWY 4. I'M VERY CONSERVATIVE AND PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE FLOWN THAT DAY HAD I BEEN ALONE. I THINK I ALLOWED THE PRESENCE OF MY FRIEND TO ALTER MY JUDGEMENT.

Frequently asked questions

How do I search flights by aircraft type on FlightFinder?

Pick an aircraft model — Boeing 737, Airbus A320, A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and more — enter your origin airport, and FlightFinder shows every route that plane flies from there with live fares.

Which aircraft types can I filter by?

We support Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787, the full Airbus A220/A319/A320/A321/A330/A340/A350/A380 family, Embraer E170/E175/E190/E195, Bombardier CRJ and Dash 8, and the ATR 42/72 turboprops.

Is FlightFinder free to use?

Search and schedules are free. Pro ($4.99/month, $39/year, or $99 one-time lifetime) unlocks the enriched flight card — on-time stats, CO₂ per passenger, amenities, live gate & weather — plus My Trips with push alerts.

Where does the route data come from?

Live schedules come from Amadeus, AeroDataBox and Travelpayouts. Observed routes (which aircraft actually flew a given city pair) are crowdsourced from adsb.lol ADS-B data under the Open Database License.
