AN ACR MD88 FLC REPOSITIONS THEIR ACFT TO A REMOTE PARKING RAMP TO CLR THE GATE FOR ANOTHER ACFT. LATER THEY FERRY THEIR ACFT TO A MAINT BASE TO CHANGE A CUT TIRE. AT THE MAINT BASE; THEY DISCOVER DAMAGE TO THE TRAILING EDGES OF BOTH WINGS; APPARENTLY CAUSED BY GND EQUIP.
I WAS THE CAPT OF AN MD88 OF A COMMERCIAL AIRLINE FLT FROM DFW-ELP-TUS. DURING HIS WALKAROUND INSPECTION AT ELP; THE FO DISCOVERED A 4 INCH CUT IN THE #4 TIRE. AFTER REF TO THE MD88 RAMP SVC MANUAL AND CONSULTING WITH COMPANY FLT CTL; DISPATCH AND THE MAINT COORDINATOR IT WAS DECIDED THAT WE WOULD DEPLANE THE PAX AND FERRY THE ACFT TO TUS WHERE A SPARE TIRE WAS AVAILABLE. WHILE WAITING FOR THE CONTRACT MAINT PERSON TO ARRIVE TO SIGN OFF OUR LOGBOOK IT BECAME NECESSARY TO REPOSITION THE ACFT TO THE REMOTE PARKING RAMP SO ANOTHER ACFT COULD USE OUR GATE. LATER; UPON OUR ARR IN TUS WE DISCOVERED DAMAGE TO THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE R WING APPROX 3 FT INBOARD OF THE WINGTIP AND ALSO DAMAGE TO THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE L AILERON. WE ASSUME THAT THIS DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY SOME TYPE OF RAMP EQUIP IN ELP DURING THE REPOSITIONING OF THE ACFT OR WHILE IT WAS PARKED IN THE REMOTE RAMP AREA PRIOR TO OUR DEP. FLT CTL; MAINT CTL; AND MY CHIEF PLT WERE ALL NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY. THE NEXT DAY TEMPORARY REPAIRS WERE MADE AND WE FERRIED THE ACFT TO OUR HOME BASE FOR PERMANENT REPAIR. THE APPROPRIATE COMPANY AND FAA RPTS WERE MADE AND TURNED IN. AT THIS TIME WE ARE AWAITING THE RESULTS OF FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE SOURCE AND TIME OF THE DAMAGE.
