MOONEY 20G PLT LANDS GEAR UP. HAD NOT RESPONDED TO THE GEAR WARNING HORN. THOUGHT HE WAS EXTENDING GEAR DURING THE GUMP CHK; BUT HAD ACTUALLY RETRACTED IT.

Narrative

PROCEEDED TO DO A STEEP TURN TO THE L THEN A STEEP TURN TO THE R. STOPPING ON A N HEADING TOWARDS FLEMING FIELD; I NOTED NO VOICE ACTIVITY 122.7 UNICOM; SO I COMMUNICATED AT ABOUT '10 MI S INBOUND ON LONG STRAIGHT-IN FOR RWY 34.' THEN TRIED TO ACTIVATE RWY AUTO LIGHTS. AT ABOUT 8 MI I IDENTED THE RWY AND COMMUNICATED MY SAME INTENTIONS. THEN I STARTED MY BGUMP; BOOST PUMP ON; GAS ON FULLEST TANK; THEN ANOTHER ACFT SAID OUR CALL SIGN (N-NUMBER) AND SAID 'MOONEY SAY AGAIN; YOU'RE COMING ACROSS WEAK AND BROKEN.' I SAID TO MY PARTNER 'HE SOUNDS ACTUALLY WEAK.... AND BROKEN. MY PARTNER REPLIED; 'YES HE REALLY WAS; I'LL COMMUNICATE AND YOU FINISH THE BGUMP.' I THEN WENT BACK TO MY BGUMP AND REMEMBERED I WAS ON THE 'U' AND PROCEEDED BY TAKING THE LNDG GEAR HANDLE WHICH AT THIS TIME WAS FORWARD AND LOCKED (WHICH IN THE MOONEY 20G IS ACTUALLY GEAR DOWN) AND MOVED IT REARWARD AND DOWN AND LOCKED (WHICH IN THE MOONEY 20G IS ACTUALLY GEAR UP). I EVEN SAID ALOUD 'GEAR DOWN AND LOCKED.' THEN I NOTED A HORN WHICH SOUNDED JUST LIKE THE STALL WARNING HORN. ON THIS PARTICULAR ACFT THE STALL WARNING HORN COMES ON AT 80 KTS INDICATED. I NOTED WE WERE SHOWING 85 KTS AND ALSO WE WERE A LITTLE HIGH ON THE VASI. I THEN BROUGHT THE THROTTLE BACK A LITTLE. WE REPEATED THE COM TO THE OTHER ACFT WHICH STILL SOUNDED WEAK AND BROKEN. I ADDED ONE NOTCH OF FLAPS NOTING THAT WE WERE STILL HIGH. AT APPROX 1 MI OUT I ADDED FULL FLAPS AND BROUGHT THE THROTTLE BACK A LITTLE. I'M STILL LOOKING AT THE SAME TIME FOR THIS OTHER ACFT THAT I THOUGHT MIGHT BE IN THE PATTERN; FEARING THAT THE OTHER ACFT MIGHT BE BELOW OR ABOVE US. ON SHORT FINAL I BROUGHT THE THROTTLE BACK COMPLETELY NOTING THAT WE WERE STILL A LITTLE HIGH AND A LITTLE FAST. THE FLARE SEEMED LONG AND FLOATY; I HELD THE FLARE UPON WHICH THE HORN SOUNDED A SECOND TIME. REALIZING WHAT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN I THROTTLED UP BUT ONLY A SECOND LATER THERE WAS IMPACT.
