AT42 ACFT AFTER LNDG WAS INSTRUCTED BY TWR CTLR TO TURN OFF NEXT TXWY. WHEN FLC TURNED OFF IT WAS ON A BARRICADED TXWY; SO TWR HAD ACFT ON APCH GAR AND RPTR ACFT TAXIED BACK ONTO RWY AND THEIR GATE.

Narrative

ON THE EVENING OF JUL/XX/97; FLYING IN ACFT FROM ST LOUIS TO MEMPHIS; TN; WE CAUSED AN ACFT THAT WAS LNDG BEHIND US IN MEMPHIS TO GO AROUND. IT ALL STARTED WHEN AFTER I LANDED THE ACFT; I GAVE THE CTLS TO THE CAPT AS USUAL. SHORTLY AFTER THAT ON THE ROLLOUT; MEMPHIS TWR TOLD US TO EXIT AT THE NEXT TXWY. I RESPONDED 'TAXI OFF THE RWY AT THE NEXT TXWY.' WHEN THE CAPT TURNED L OFF RWY 36R; THE TXWY WAS BLOCKED OFF BY BARRICADES. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD THE TWR AND THEY TOLD US TO STAY PUT. WE DID AS HE REQUESTED AND HE TOLD THE ACFT ON SHORT FINAL TO GO AROUND. I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE CARRIER WAS; ALL I KNOW IT WAS A JET; I THINK A B727 FREIGHTER. LOOKING BACK; SOME FACTORS THAT COULD HAVE AFFECTED THE SIT WERE RWY 36R IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION; AND NOT ALL THE TXWY CLOSURES ARE ANNOUNCED ON ATIS. ALSO; I WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY CLOSURES DUE TO THE CAPT; WHO WAS WORKING THE RADIOS; DID NOT WRITE DOWN ANY TXWY CLOSURES ON THE 'TOLD' CARD. ALSO THE TWR CTLR SHOULD HAVE SPECIFIED A TXWY WITH A LETTER DESIGNATOR. I DIDN'T THINK MUCH ABOUT THE SIT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY WHEN THE CAPT ADVISED ME I SHOULD WRITE TO NASA JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. P.S. AFTER THE ACFT WENT AROUND; WE RECEIVED NEW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND TAXIED TO OUR GATE WITHOUT ANY FURTHER PROBS.
