Synopsis

A MOONEY 20L ON LNDG HAD PROP STRIKE DUE TO FAILURE TO LOWER THE LNDG GEAR AND EXECUTED A GAR.

Narrative

WENT TO ARPT TO MEET INSTRUCTOR FOR RECURRENCY TRAINING IN ACFT IN WHICH I HAD PREVIOUSLY LOGGED ABOUT 15 HRS. INSTRUCTOR FAILED TO SHOW. I CALLED INSTRUCTOR AT HOME. HE HAD MISUNDERSTOOD/FORGOT APPOINTMENT; BUT ENCOURAGED ME TO COMPLETE RECURRENCY BY DOING 3 TOUCH AND GOES. MY 7 YR OLD SON WAS WITH ME; BUT BECAUSE OF DESIRE TO COMPLETE FLT; I FLEW WITH PAX WITHOUT BEING CURRENT. ON SECOND LNDG; I BECAME DISTRACTED WITH OUTSIDE TFC (4 OTHER ACFT IN PATTERN) AND FAILED TO EXTEND GEAR. GEAR HORN FAILED TO SOUND OR WAS NOT LOUD ENOUGH TO BE HEARD WITH HEADSETS ON. PROP TIP CONTACTED RWY; TINNY NOISE CAUSED ME TO REALIZE GEAR WAS NOT EXTENDED. SUFFICIENT AIRSPD WAS AVAILABLE TO ABORT LNDG. ENG RESPONDED NORMALLY AND A GAR EXECUTED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. BOTTOM LINE -- I DON'T THINK PAX CONTRIBUTED TO PROP STRIKE -- ALTHOUGH IT WAS A BAD IDEA AND NOT WHAT I WANTED OR SHOULD HAVE DONE. I DO BELIEVE A GEAR WARNING HORN WHICH HAD BEEN HEARD WOULD'VE PREVENTED PROP STRIKE. ISN'T PREVENTION BETTER THAN AN INCIDENT?
