BEECH DUKE ACFT HAD SURGING ENG; RPTR SHUT IT DOWN AND DIVERTED TO THE NEAREST ARPT WHERE HE RESTARTED ENG AND IT APPEARED NORMAL. AFTER REFUELING RPTR CONTINUED ON TO DEST AND ENRTE THE ENG AGAIN SURGED; SHOOK AND TRAILED SMOKE. AGAIN RPTR SHUT IT DOWN AND IT'S NOW IN THE SHOP.
ENRTE BACK FROM AUSTIN; TX; AFTER PICKING UP P60. WAS ABOUT 75 MI OUT OF PUEBLO; CO; ON LET DOWN TO PICK UP FUEL BEFORE CONTINUING TO COLORADO SPRINGS; CO. L ENG BEGAN TO SURGE AND WAS UNCONTROLLABLE. DECIDED TO SHUT DOWN AND FEATHER PROP. I INFORMED CTR AND ASKED FOR THE NEAREST ARPT WHICH WAS LA JUNTA AND WAS GIVEN AN INITIAL HEADING WHILE REPROGRAMMING GPS. CTR ASKED IF I WAS DECLARING AN EMER AND I REPLIED NO. BROKE OUT OF CLOUDS AT ABOUT 12000 FT AND HAD ARPT IN SIGHT AND MADE NORMAL LNDG. I CALLED CTR AND CANCELED MY FLT PLAN AND RPTED THAT I WAS ON THE GND AT LA JUNTA. I RESTARTED L ENG AND IT RAN FINE UP TO 1500 RPM. I WENT AHEAD AND SHUT DOWN; FUELED ACFT WITH 100 GALS OF GAS. OBSERVED LIGHT ICE ON AIRFRAME AND ON FUEL TANK VENT. I CLRED OFF ICE AS GOOD AS I COULD. WIND CHILL OF -44 DEGS F. AFTER FUELING STARTED ACFT AND LET IDLE TO WARM BACK UP TO TEMP. DID RUN-UP AND STARTED TKOF ROLL. L ENG SURGED AT TKOF PWR AND ATTRIBUTED IT TO COLD OIL. ON FLT TO COLORADO SPRINGS; L ENG WAS STARTING TO SHAKE AND WAS TRAILING BACK SMOKE. ADJUSTING THE MIXTURE ENDED SMOKING BUT WAS STILL RUNNING ROUGH. LANDED COLORADO SPRINGS AND ACFT IS IN SHOP WAITING OUTCOME OF THEIR INSPECTION ON L ENG.
