A BE35 PLT RAN OUT OF FUEL APPROX 40 MI AFTER TKOF AND HE MADE AN OFF ARPT LNDG.
ON JAN/XA/98 I WAS GOING TO TAKE A BONANZA FROM CPR TO IWS. I DID A COMPLETE PREFLT ON THE AIRPLANE IN THE HANGAR. THEN I DID A COMPLETE RUNUP ON THE ACFT. AT FIRST I HAD A HARD TIME STARTING THE AIRPLANE; SO I RECEIVED A GPU START. THE AIRPLANE KICKED RIGHT OVER. AFTER THAT I TAXIED OUT TO RWY 21. AT THIS TIME THE FUEL WAS COMING FROM THE AUX TANKS. I DEPARTED FROM RWY 21 AND MADE A L TURN OUT TO PROCEED SE ON VICTOR AIRWAY 19. I HAD JOINED UP ON VICTOR 19 AND STARTED ON MY WAY. I GOT ABOUT 30-40 MI OUT OF CPR AND SWITCHED TO THE L MAIN TANK. THEN ABOUT 10 MINS LATER; THE ENG STARTED TO SPUTTER; SO I TURNED ON THE FUEL BOOST PUMP. IT HELPED A LITTLE; BUT IT WAS TIME TO FIND A PLACE TO LAND. AFTER I PUSHED THE THROTTLE; MIXTURE; AND PROPS FULL FORWARD; I SAW A ROAD OFF TO MY L. I WENT FOR THE ROAD; BUT THE WINDS WERE TOO STRONG. I DECIDED TO LAND IN THE FIELD. I CONFIGURED THE AIRPLANE FOR LNDG AND TOUCHDOWN IN THE FIELD. I HAD GOTTEN A HOLD OF APCH BEFORE LNDG AND IDENTED FOR HIM. ONCE I WAS ON THE GND I TRIED TO GET A HOLD OF APCH ON THE RADIO WITH NO LUCK. AN ACR WAS OVERHEAD AND THEY RELAYED A MESSAGE TO APCH FOR ME. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE OR THE PLT. AFTER ALL SAID AND DONE; I HAVE TALKED TO FLT STANDARDS.
