Synopsis

PLT OF PA28 PRACTICING TKOF AND LNDGS BEHIND A CESSNA LANDS PRIOR TO THE CESSNA CLRING THE RWY.

Narrative

WHILE PRACTICING LNDGS AT A NON TWRED ARPT; I CONTRIBUTED TO WHAT I BELIEVE IS TERMED A 'RWY INCURSION.' THE EVENT WAS INADVERTENT AND NOT DELIBERATE. I TOOK OFF IN MY RENTED PIPER WARRIOR AFTER A CESSNA AHEAD OF ME HAD TAKEN OFF. WE BOTH STAYED IN THE PATTERN; MAKING L TFC. THE DOWNWIND; BASE; AND FINAL LEGS WERE UNEVENTFUL; AND I BELIEVED THAT I WAS MAINTAINING SUFFICIENT HORIZ SPACING BTWN US. BY THE TIME I HAD TURNED ONTO FINAL; THE CESSNA APPEARED TO BE CLOSE TO THE RWY THRESHOLD. AS I CROSSED THE RWY THRESHOLD; THE ACFT AHEAD OF ME APPEARED TO BE TAXIING OPPOSITE AN EXIT RAMP WELL PAST MID-FIELD. I BELIEVED THAT BY THE TIME I TOUCHED DOWN; THE OTHER ACFT WOULD BE CLR OF THE RWY. AS I PERFORMED BY FLARE-OUT; I CONCENTRATED ON MY IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS. I LANDED SHORT ENOUGH TO EXIT THE RWY AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE RAMP SO THAT I COULD RETURN FOR ANOTHER TKOF AND LNDG. WHEN I TOUCHED; HOWEVER; I NOTICED THAT THE CESSNA WAS STILL TAXIING ON THE RWY. THE CESSNA PLT NOTICED THAT I HAD LANDED BEHIND HIM AND OBJECTED ON THE UNICOM FREQ. I APOLOGIZED AS I EXITED THE RWY. WE WERE NEVER CLOSER THAN 800 FT OR 900 FT FROM EACH OTHER; AND I DON'T BELIEVE THERE WAS ANY REAL DANGER OF US COLLIDING. IN MY OPINION; THE CESSNA DID NOT EXPEDITE ITS DEP FROM THE RWY. HOWEVER; I'LL ADMIT THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO THINGS I SHOULD HAVE DONE TO AVOID THE SIT. I SHOULD HAVE PERFORMED S-TURNS ON FINAL TO INCREASE THE HORIZ DISTANCE BTWN US; AND I SHOULD HAVE PERFORMED A GAR BEFORE FLARING OUT SINCE THE OTHER ACFT WAS NOT CLR OF THE RWY. I'VE LEARNED MY LESSON.
