Synopsis

B747-400 ACFT LNDG AT HKG LANDED SHORT OF DISPLACED THRESHOLD. CAPT ATTRIBUTES FATIGUE AS A FACTOR.

Narrative

AFTER COMPLETING AN IGS APCH (VFR CONDITIONS) TO RWY 13 AT HONG KONG; ACFT SANK BELOW NORMAL VISUAL DSCNT PATH AFTER REACHING MDA (680 FT) AND TOUCHED DOWN 280 METERS SHORT OF DISPLACED THRESHOLD OF RWY 13. NO WINDSHEAR. JUST POOR TECHNIQUE BY PF; WHICH WAS ME. POSSIBLY DUE TO FATIGUE AFTER A 15 HR 40 MIN FLT WHICH WAS DELAYED 20 HRS ORIGINALLY DUE TO ACFT MAINT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE APCH ENTAILS FLYING THE ILS TO 600 FT AT WHICH TIME THE FLC MUST HAVE VISUAL REF AND CONTINUE VISUALLY. RPTR CAPT SAYS THAT HAD HE KEPT THE FLARE FOR ANOTHER SECOND HE WOULD HAVE LANDED BEYOND THE THRESHOLD. THOUGH HE LANDED SHORT OF THE THRESHOLD; THERE IS AT LEAST 1000 FT OF RWY SHORT OF THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD. RPTR CAPT SAYS THAT FATIGUE WAS DEFINITELY A MAJOR FACTOR. TWR CTLR ASKED HIM IF HE HAD WINDSHEAR PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN TO WHICH HE REPLIED; NO; HE JUST MESSED UP. AFTER DEPLANING HE CONTACTED THE TWR TO DISCUSS IT FURTHER AS THEY SEEMED TO BE CONCERNED. RPTR ALSO SPOKE WITH HIS ACR CHIEF PLT. TWR CTLR TOLD RPTR THAT HE CONSIDERED THE MATTER CLOSED. NO ACFT DAMAGE. JUST SOME DAMAGE TO PRIDE.
