Synopsis

PLT OF A C172 FAILED TO RECEIVE CLRNC PRIOR TO ENTERING CLASS B AIRSPACE DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF CONVERSATION WITH THE APCH CTLR PRIOR TO ENTERING THE AIRSPACE.

Narrative

ON INITIAL CONTACT WITH APCH CTL; I ADVISED THEM THAT I WAS APCHING MID CHANNEL (A FIX THAT WE USE TO IDENT WITH). AT THIS TIME; THE CTLR ADVISED THAT I CONTINUE INBOUND. HE LATER ASKED FOR MY POS IN RELATION TO THE KOKO HEAD VOR WHICH I GAVE TO HIM. I CONTINUED INBOUND 'WITHOUT RECEIVING CLRNC TO ENTER CLASS B AIRSPACE.' IN THE VICINITY OF THE ARPT; A CTLR ASKED IF I WAS ON FREQ. I REPLIED THAT I WAS AND HE CLRED ME FOR RWY 4L AND TOLD ME TO CONTACT THE TWR. I CONTACTED THE TWR AND WAS TOLD THAT I WAS NOW CLRED FOR RWY 4R. I LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND GND TOLD ME TO CALL THE TWR SUPVR. I SPOKE WITH THE SUPVR AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THEY HADN'T CLRED ME TO ENTER THE AIRSPACE AND IF I REMEMBERED THE CTLR ASKING ME TO RPT OVER KOKO HEAD (WHICH I DIDN'T). I THEN REALIZED THAT I HADN'T RECEIVED CLRNC AND APOLOGIZED WHEN I REALIZED MY MISTAKE. HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THEIR FAULT ALSO FOR NOT GIVING ME A NEW SQUAWK CODE (I WAS XFERRED BY CTR) BUT THAT I NEEDED TO BE CAREFUL AND LISTEN FOR THE CLRNC. I TEACH MY STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ALL THE TIME BUT I MYSELF FORGOT! I REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF PAYING ATTN AND COMMUNICATING CLRLY WITH ATC. THE FACT THAT THEY HADN'T GIVEN ME A SQUAWK CODE JUSTIFIED NOTHING. I SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL I HEARD THE WORDS 'CLRED TO ENTER CLASS B AIRSPACE' BEFORE I CONTINUED INBOUND.
