AN SMA MOONEY FLIES THROUGH ZAU; IL; AIRSPACE SUFFERS ENG STOPPAGE DUE TO ICE. PLT IS ABLE TO RESTART ENG AND CONTINUED ON TO DEST.
AFTER NUMEROUS BRIEFINGS; DEPARTED INTO LOW CEILING; DRIZZLE ABOVE FREEZING; ENCOUNTERED LIGHT TO MODERATE ICE DURING CLBOUT. BRIEFINGS SHOWED MULTIPLE LAYERS AND NO ICE BEING RPTED. AT 12000 FT PULLED CARB HEAT IN VISIBLE MOISTURE. ENG QUIT RUNNING FROM CARB HEAT APPLICATION. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: PLT WAS FLYING 1960 MOONEY. ENG HAS NORMAL CARBURETION. THE FLT WAS FROM DTW; MI; TO ANOTHER ARPT IN THE RFD; IL; AREA. PLT HAD LOOKED IN THE FSS BRIEFINGS FOR INDICATIONS THAT THERE WERE CLR AREAS WITH NO ICING. HE FLEW IN CLR AREAS UNTIL HE WAS IN SBN AREA. AT THAT LOCATION HE GOT INTO SOME CLOUDS AND ICING BEGAN TO FORM. WHEN HE APPLIED CARB HEAT; HE FELT A CLUNK LIKE SOUND GO THROUGH THE ENG. THEN; THE ENG STARTED TO RUN ROUGH; HE PUSHED CARB HEAT BACK IN AND THE ENG RAN SMOOTH FOR A SHORT WHILE THEN ROUGH. PLT AGAIN APPLIED CARB HEAT AND ENG QUIT. PLT MOVED CARB HEAT TO OFF POS AND THE ENG WAS ABLE TO RESTART. WITH ENG NOT OPERATING; HIS ACFT LOST 500 FT OF ALT. PLT CONTINUED ON TO DEST. HE DID TELL ZAU ABOUT HIS ENG PROB WHEN IT HAD STOPPED BUT HE NEVER DECLARED AN EMER. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION AT DEST FIELD; IT WAS FOUND THAT OF THE MOVING DOORS THAT CARB HEAT FLOWS THROUGH; ONE DOOR OPERATED PROPERLY WHILE THE OTHER ONE DID NOT MOVE AT ALL.
