Synopsis

AN SMT LANDS GEAR UP DURING A TRAINING FLT AT HYW; SC.

Narrative

THIS LESSON WAS ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO PATTERN WORK. WE WERE TO BE PRACTICING BOTH NORMAL AND SHORT FIELD TKOF AND LNDGS. WE SHOULD ALSO INTRODUCE SINGLE ENG APCHS FOR THE FIRST TIME. FIRST WE DID 2 NORMAL LNDGS THEN WE DID 2 SHORT FIELD LNDGS. NOW IT WAS TIME FOR THE FIRST SINGLE ENG APCH. DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE ALONE IN THE PATTERN I LET THE STUDENT CONTINUE FLYING THE PLANE EVEN THOUGH HE HAD TO STRUGGLE TO KEEP AIRSPD AND SOME KIND OF DIRECTIONAL CTL. I HAD TO CONSTANTLY HELP HIM WITH AIRSPD AND DIRECTIONAL CTL. PREVIOUSLY WE HAD PRACTICED SIMULATED ENG OUT ON ALT AND HE DID HANDLE IT WELL. NOW CLOSER TO THE GND HE DID NOT HANDLE IT AS WELL DUE TO THE FACT THAT I CONSTANTLY HAD TO REMIND HIM ABOUT AIRSPD AND DIRECTIONAL CTL AND ALSO BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE A NORMAL PATTERN. WE DID NOT DO THE THINGS THAT NORMALLY ARE CONNECTED TO BASE AND FINAL. (MIXTURE FULL FORWARD; PROPS FULL FORWARD; GEAR DOWN AND GREEN.) I WAS TOO BUSY WITH CORRECTING HIM AND I NEVER CHKED THAT HE PUT THE GEAR DOWN. BY THE TIME I DISCOVERED IT WAS ALREADY TOO LATE.
