LR35 ACFT ON APCH IS TOLD BY APCH CTLR TO MAINTAIN 170 KTS; BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE BEHIND A HVY ACFT; CAPT INSTRUCTED PF; FO; TO SLOW DOWN. CAUSED TFC PROBLEM WITH ANOTHER ACFT IN TRAIL.

Narrative

WE WERE TOLD TO MAINTAIN SPEED 170 KTS TO FOORD 6.4 MI OUT ON ILS RWY 23L APCH CLE. WE WERE FOLLOWING A HEAVY ACFT IN FRONT OF US DOWN ON THE APCH. THE CAPT I WAS FLYING WITH TOLD ME TO SLOW DOWN A LITTLE DUE TO FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE FOR WAKE TURB AVOIDANCE; SO I SLOWED DOWN TO 155-160 KTS. WHEN WE WERE HANDED OFF TO TWR; INSIDE OF FOORD INTERSECTION BY THIS TIME; TWR WANTED US TO KEEP OUR SPEED UP ALL THE WAY TO THE RUNWAY BECAUSE OF FOLLOWING TRAFFIC ON THE ILS BEHIND US. I COMPLIED (NO SPEED RESTRICTION WAS GIVEN; EXCEPT TO KEEP IT FAST). WHEN WE LANDED GND WANTED US TO CALL APCH. THE CAPT CALLED AND EXPLAINED THAT WE WERE AVOIDING GETTING CLOSE TO THE HEAVY ACFT IN FRONT OF US FOR WAKE TURB AVOIDANCE. AT THE POINT WHERE WE SLOWED DOWN WAS WHEN WE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE ACFT AHEAD OF US. BEING NEW TO FLYING THE LEAR; SINCE I CAN ONLY FLY EMPTY LEFS; I DON'T HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE IN A BUSY ATC ENVIRONMENT FOLLOWING CLOSELY IN LINE ON APPROACHES. I LISTENED TO WHAT THE CAPT WAS TELLING ME TO DO. I SHOULD'VE EITHER LISTENED TO ATC APPROACH CONTROL OR TOLD (OR HAD THE CAPT TELL HIM) WE COULDN'T COMPLY WITH THE RESTRICTION AND WHY. BUT BEING INEXPERIENCED; I LISTENED TO THE CAPT I WAS FLYING WITH FOR ADVICE AND GUIDANCE.
