Synopsis

A PVT PLT IN A PA28 ENTERS THE SLC CLASS B WITHOUT AUTH. ACFT HAD A DEFECTIVE MODE C AND HAD BEEN ADVISED OF THIS PRIOR TO LNDG AND DEP FROM BTF ARPT PRIOR TO THE PENETRATION.

Narrative

MAY/XA/98 I FLEW FROM LGU TO BTF AND THEN TO U07; VFR IN ARROW. ON THE FLT FROM LGU TO BTF; SLC APCH SAID THAT MY MODE C WAS INTERMITTENT. I LANDED AT BTF AND PICKED UP MY PAX. AT THE END OF THE RWY AFTER RUNUP I CALLED SLC APCH ON 120.7 AS DIRECTED BY THE SIGN THERE FOR IFR OR VFR CLRNC. APCH INSTRUCTED ME TO CONTACT SLC TWR AFTER I WAS AIRBORNE. THE FIRST MISTAKE I MADE WAS TO ASSUME THAT THEY WOULD TELL THE TWR I WAS COMING. I WENT BACK TO CTAF AND DEPARTED BTF TO THE S. THERE IS ONLY A FEW MI BEFORE YOU ENTER CLASS B. I CALLED TWR AND THEY ASSIGNED A XPONDER CODE AND SAID GET ATIS AND STAY CLR OF CLASS B. I MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLR OF CLASS B AS CLRED CLASS B. THEN THEY SAID MY MODE C WAS NOT WORKING AND TO CYCLE IT OFF AND BACK ON; WHICH I DID. BY THIS TIME I WAS IN CLASS B. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT I HAD ENTERED CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC. THEY ASKED THEN IF I WANTED TO RETURN TO BTF BECAUSE OF THE MODE C PROB. I ELECTED TO CONTINUE THE FLT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WAY TO GET THE MODE C FIXED THEN AND I WAS WORKING ON GETTING THE 24 MONTHS INSPECTIONS DONE THE NEXT WK ANYWAY. APCH TOLD ME AFTER I WAS HANDED BACK TO THEM BY THE TWR THAT THEY WOULD RPT THIS TO THE FAA. I MADE A COUPLE OF MISTAKES. THE FIRST WAS ASSUMING THAT BY TALKING TO APCH CTL WHILE ON THE GND AT BTF THAT WHEN I TALKED TO THE TWR THEY WOULD CLR ME FOR CLASS B. THE SECOND WAS THAT I DID NOT ABORT THE FLT WHEN APCH TOLD ME THAT MY MODE C WAS INTERMITTENT. APCH DID NOT TELL ME NOT TO CONTINUE WHEN I WAS GOING IN SO I ASSUMED THAT I COULD CONTINUE THE FLT. ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT CONFUSED ME WAS THE REQUEST TO PICK UP SLC ATIS; BECAUSE I WAS NOT GOING TO THEIR ARPT. ON THE RETURN TRIP I DID NOT RETURN MY PAX TO BTF BUT FLEW TO LGU AND DROVE THEM TO BTF TO AVOID THE CLASS B.
