A B737-500 ON TKOF AT 50 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO SMELL AND SMOKE IN THE CABIN WITH ASSOCIATED #2 ENG VIBRATION. CAUSED BY BIRD INGESTION INCURRING DAMAGE TO THE FAN BLADES.
JUST AFTER TKOF; ACR FLT XYZ EXPERIENCED VIBRATION FROM AN UNKNOWN SOURCE. THIS WAS JUST BEFORE GEAR RETRACTION. THERE WAS A BURNING TYPE OF SMELL IN THE COCKPIT AND THE CABIN RPTED SMOKE WITH A STRONG SMELL. NORMAL CHKLISTS WERE FOLLOWED AFTER TKOF. AFTER PWR REDUCTION; VIBRATION DIMINISHED SLIGHTLY AND THE SMELL DIMINISHED IN THE COCKPIT. CABIN INDICATED SMOKE AND SMELL. AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH NORFOLK TWR. FLT XYZ WAS VECTORED FOR APCH TO RWY 5 AT ORF. DURING CLOSE IN APCH THE TWR RPTED HVY RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS. THE XWIND AND THE HVY RAIN MADE A GAR NECESSARY. AFTER THE GAR WE DETERMINED THAT THE WX AT ORF WAS NOT SUITABLE AND WE ELECTED TO PROCEED TO THE CLOSEST ALTERNATE DUE TO THE RPTED WX AT ORF. THE CLOSEST ARPT WITH GOOD WX WAS PHF. APCH AND LNDG AT PHF WAS NORMAL. NO EVAC WAS NECESSARY AND WE TAXIED TO THE RAMP. WE DETERMINED ENRTE FROM ORF TO PHF THAT THE MOST LIKELY PROB WAS THE #2 ENG. THE ENG PARAMETERS WERE NORMAL EXCEPT FOR THE #2 ENG VIBRATION INDICATOR WHICH WAS BTWN 3 AND 4. POSTFLT INSPECTION INDICATED BIRD STRIKE TO THE #2 ENG WITH DAMAGE TO THE FAN BLADES.
