Synopsis

A B727 LNDG GEAR LIGHT SYS WAS REPAIRED WITH A LNDG GEAR ACCESSORY UNIT AND TESTED PER THE MAINT MANUAL. THE PROC DID NOT REQUIRE TESTING THE ASSOCIATED SYS USING OUTPUTS FROM THE UNIT.

Narrative

ON JUL/XX/98; I WAS TOLD TO WORK ON ACFT XYZ WHICH HAD A LNDG GEAR PROB. THE WRITE-UP SAID THAT WHEN THE CREW PUT DOWN THE GEAR HANDLE; ALL OF THE GREEN GEAR SAFE LIGHTS AND ALL OF THE RED GEAR UNSAFE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CREW RETRACTED THE GEAR AND LOWERED THE GEAR AGAIN; WITH THE SYS WORKING CORRECTLY THIS; THE SECOND TIME. I CONFERRED WITH THE CREW CHIEF; AND WE AGREED THAT THE PROB WAS PROBABLY THE LNDG GEAR ACCESSORY UNIT. THAT UNIT IS COMMON TO ALL OF THE INDIVIDUAL LIGHTS. I PULLED UP THE MAINT MANUAL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROC AND THE TEST PROC. THE FIRST STEP OF THE TEST PROC STATED THAT THE FOLLOWING TEST ONLY TESTED CRITICAL SYS THAT WENT THROUGH THE LNDG GEAR ACCESSORY UNIT; IMPLYING THAT OTHER; NON CRITICAL SYS THAT WENT THROUGH THE UNIT WERE NOT TESTED. THE CHIEF AND I AGREED THAT THE TEST STEP WAS PROBLEMATIC AND UNCLR; THE TEST DID NOT THEREAFTER MENTION WHICH SYS NEEDED TO BE TESTED (NON CRITICAL). THE MGR YYZ THEN DIRECTED ME TO CHANGE THE UNIT AND TEST IT ACCORDING TO THE PAPERWORK I WAS HOLDING; EVEN OVER MY THOUGHT TO SEEK ADDITIONAL INFO AND DIRECTION FROM THE MAINT MANUAL. SO I CHANGED THE LNDG GEAR ACCESSORY UNIT AND TESTED IT PER PAPERWORK. THEN; I WENT AHEAD AND SIGNED OFF MY WORK.
