B767-200 DSNDING INTO LAX. ON IOE; FLC DSNDS THROUGH ALT AND DOES NOT CTL AIRSPD. SEVERAL TIMES CHK CAPT HAS TO TAKE CTL OF THE ACFT.

Narrative

INBOUND TO LAX DSNDING ON THE REDEYE 1 ARR (STAR) THE PF; WHO WAS RECEIVING IOE IN THE L SEAT. RPTR WAS CHK AIRMAN IN R SEAT AS PNF. THIS FLT WAS ONLY THE 4TH LEG FOR PF IN HIS FIRST WDB HIGHLY AUTOMATED ACFT. PF SELECTED VNAV FOR INITIAL DSCNT FROM CRUISE ALT; BUT THEN SELECTED A DIFFERENT DSCNT MODE (FLT LEVEL CHANGE) WITHOUT MAKING CHANGE TO ALT PORTION OF THE MCP. THIS CAUSED ACFT TO DSND BELOW A 10000 FT RESTR ON THE STAR MOMENTARILY (300 FT) AT AN AIRSPD ABOVE 250 KTS (270 KTS). PF WAS NOT AHEAD OF THE ACFT AND WASN'T WATCHING THE FLT MODE ANNUNCIATORS TO SEE WHAT HE HAD SELECTED. PNF TOOK CTL AND RETURNED ACFT TO PROPER ALT. NO KNOWN CONFLICTS AT THIS EARLY TIME IN THE MORNING. NOT TCASII EQUIPPED. PF WAS EXPERIENCING TUNNEL VISION AND BUTTON PUSHING ON MCP DUE TO LACK OF EXPERIENCE. POSSIBLE FATIGUE AFTER 5 HR LONG LEG AT NIGHT; NOT OPERATING AT PEAK EFFICIENCY. ON VISUAL APCH THE PF WAS AGAIN BEHIND THE ACFT AND WHEN HE COULDN'T PROGRAM OR SELECT THE PROPER MODES HE DEAUTOMATED WHEN HE COULDN'T MAKE THINGS WORK. INEXPERIENCE IN FIRST AUTOMATED ACFT WAS SHOWING AND A VALUABLE LESSON WAS LEARNED.
