A B737-200 HOLDING SHORT OF AN ASSIGNED GATE WAS GIVEN A GATE CHANGE AND IN TURNING OFF TO THE NEW GATE STRUCK A JETWAY INCURRING DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING #1 SLAT.
I WAS THE CAPT ON ACR FLT XYZ ON DEC/XA/98 OPERATING FROM CLT TO SYR. AFTER A NORMAL FLT AND LNDG IN SYR; THE ACFT WAS TAXIED TO THE PARKING AREA. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO PARK AT GATE Z BY OUR ACARS AND AS WE APCHED THE GATE ON A WET RAMP AND LOW LIGHTING CONDITIONS NO GND PERSONNEL WERE IN OUR VIEW. THE ACFT WAS STOPPED APPROX 30 FT PRIOR TO THE PARK LINE. THE JETWAY WAS POSITIONED WELL CLR OF THE PARKING LINE. WE CALLED SYRACUSE OPS AND WERE TOLD TO PROCEED TO GATE Y WHERE GND PERSONNEL WERE WAITING FOR THE ACFT. WE TURNED AWAY (TO THE R) FROM THE JETWAY AND AS WE TURNED; THE L WING (APPROX 2 FT FROM THE TIP) STRUCK THE JETWAY DAMAGING THE WING. AT THE SAME TIME THE IMPACT OCCURRED; A MECH ARRIVED WITH LIGHT WANDS AND WE WERE DIRECTED TO STOP. ACFT WAS STOPPED WHILE DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED BY MECHS. THE ACFT WAS THEN DIRECTED VIA GND SIGNALS (LIGHT WANDS) TO PROCEED TO GATE Y WHERE THE ACFT WAS PARKED. INCORRECT GATE INFO; POOR LIGHTING CONDITIONS; AND A WET RAMP (LIMITING VISIBILITY OF PARKING LINES) WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS INCIDENT.
