Synopsis

A B727-200 WHILE BEING GUIDED ON TO A GATE WITH A GUIDEMAN; 2 WING WALKERS AND A PARKING LIGHT SYS WAS STRUCK BY A BACKING FOOD TRUCK INCURRING L WING DAMAGE.

Narrative

WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO GATE ZY; ACR RAMP IN ATLANTA. I OBSERVED WING WALKER ON L SIDE SIGNAL ALL CLR. FO OBSERVED WING WALKER ON R SIDE SIGNAL ALL CLR. I EXECUTED A NORMAL SQUARE TURN TO THE L AND ALIGNED THE ACFT WITH THE LEAD-IN LIGHT BARS. I BEGAN A SLOW NORMAL STRAIGHT APCH TO THE GATE. THE GREEN 'GO' LIGHT WAS ON IN THE LEAD-IN LIGHT SYS AT THE GATE. FO AGAIN CALLED 'CLR R.' I RECHKED THE L WING WALKER WHO WAS STILL SIGNALING ALL CLR AND RESPONDED 'CLR L.' I TURNED MY ATTN BACK TO THE GREEN LIGHT AND ALIGNMENT LIGHT BARS (LEAD-IN LIGHTS) WHICH WERE STILL PERFECTLY ALIGNED. 10-15 FT FROM THE STOP LINE; WE FELT A BUMP. I STOPPED THE ACFT AND SET THE PARKING BRAKES. THE GREEN LIGHT TURNED TO RED. WE WERE INFORMED BY OUR RAMP CTL THAT AN ACR FOOD SVC TRUCK HAD BACKED INTO THE PATH OF OUR L WING BY ABOUT 3 FT. ENGS WERE SHUT DOWN. MAINT PUSHED THE ACFT BACK TO CLR THE TRUCK AND PAX WERE DEPLANED THROUGH FORWARD ENTRY DOOR INTO JETWAY -- NO INJURIES; DAMAGE TO L WINGTIP; AND LEADING EDGE OF WING. EVENT OCCURRED APPARENTLY BECAUSE L WING WALKER WAS NOT MONITORING POS OF WING WITH RELATION TO ACR TRUCK WHICH EVENTUALLY HAD BEGUN TO BACK UP WITHOUT NOTICING THAT OUR ACFT WAS BEHIND THE TRUCK.
