A300 CREW DECLARES AN EMER AND DIVERTS TO LAND SHORT OF DEST DUE TO MEDICAL PROB ON BOARD IN ZNY AIRSPACE.
FLT FROM SJU-EWR. AFTER LEVEL OFF NEAR KRAFT; FLT ATTENDANT CALLED US ON COCKPIT PHONE AND SAID WE HAD A SICK PAX ON BOARD AND PHYSICIANS WERE LOOKING AFTER HER. WE TOLD HER TO KEEP US ADVISED. A WHILE LATER; SHE CALLED BACK AND SAID THE PAX WAS MUCH WORSE AND THE DOCTORS SAID TO THINK ABOUT GETTING HER ON THE GND. WE GAVE THE FLT ATTENDANT THE EMER MEDICAL KIT AND I INITIATED A PHONE PATCH ON HF THROUGH COMMERCIAL RADIO TO INCLUDE IAH DISPATCH. THE DOCTORS SAID THE PATIENT WAS BETTER; BUT SHE SOON BECAME BAD AGAIN. THE PHONE PATCH LASTED 15-20 MINS. I TOLD DISPATCH OUR POS AND NEAREST ALTERNATES -- BDA (BERMUDA); ORF; ETC. SOON THE PHYSICIANS SAID WE NEEDED TO LAND ASAP AND MED ON PHONE AGREED. DISPATCH TOLD US TO GO TO BDA; AND GAVE ME THE WX AND FUEL. I TOLD THEM WE WOULD BE OVER MAX LNDG WT; AND ASKED IF THAT WOULD BE OK. HE DIDN'T ANSWER AND I TOLD COMMERCIAL RADIO WE WANTED TO DIVERT TO BDA. HE SAID STAND BY. I HAD THE BDA APCH PLATES ALREADY OUT AND DIALED IN NEW YORK APCH ON VHF. WE SQUAWKED 7700 AND THE CAPT STARTED TURNING TOWARD BDA. HE DECLARED AN EMER WITH COMMERCIAL RADIO. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED NEW YORK (VHF) AND HE HAD US IN RADAR CONTACT. I TOLD HIM THE SIT; DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED A LOWER ALT TO BURN FUEL. THE CAPT WAS ON HF. I TOLD HIM TO TELL COMMERCIAL RADIO WHAT WE WERE DOING; BUT I DON'T KNOW IF HE DID. HE HAD NEVER USED HF OR MED PHONE PATCH BEFORE. WE FLEW AT 310 KTS WITH GEAR AND SPD BRAKES OUT AND MADE A NORMAL WT LNDG. I DON'T KNOW IF COMMERCIAL RADIO KNEW WE WERE TALKING TO NEW YORK APCH. I CANCELED THE EMER WITH BDA TWR.
