AN ACR FLC IN A BEECH 1900 HAD AN NMAC WITH AN E120 THAT OVERRAN THEM DURING SHORT FINAL APCH.
FLL-EYW CLRED TO 1500 FT MSL BY NAVY KEY WEST. WE WERE TOLD TO RPT THE ARPT IN SIGHT. THE ARPT WAS RPTED INSIGHT. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL RWY 27 AT EYW (OVER TOP THE AIRBASE WAS APPROVED) CONTACT THE EYW TWR. CONTACTING THE TWR; WE WERE NOT IN SIGHT AND TOLD TO RPT OVER THE AIRBASE TURNING FINAL. WE RPTED OVER THE AIRBASE TURNING FINAL. WE WERE TOLD NOT IN SIGHT; THEN ACR Y CHKED ON WITH TWR FOR THE VISUAL. THE TWR CTLR SPENT THE NEXT FEW SECONDS YELLING AT THE EMB120. THE CTLR TOLD ACR Y TO BREAK OFF THE APCH. AT THAT TIME THE TCASII SHOWED A TARGET +200 FT OF OUR POS (THERE WAS NO TARGET BEFORE THAT TIME). WE DID HEAR ACR Y MAKING THE STEPDOWNS BEHIND US; BUT WE WRE UNAWARE OF THE FOLLOWING DISTANCE. WE LANDED WITH NO FURTHER EVENTS. THERE WAS A PERIOD OF TIME FROM THE FIRST CONTACT WITH THE EMB120 TO ABOUT 150 FT AGL WHERE WE WRE UNABLE TO REACH THE TWR CTLR. SHE EXPLAINED THE GAP IN TIME WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT SHE WAS ON THE PHONE WITH NAVY KEY WEST. AFTER SUCH A LONG PERIOD OF TIME WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE; OUR INTENTIONS WERE TO GO AROUND. I WAS CONCERNED WITH THE CLOSE PROX OF THE OTHER ACFT. WE DID NOT HAVE VISUAL CONTACT; LAST CONTACT WAS THE TCASII AT +200 FT. I'M UNSURE OF THE INFO THAT IS EXCHANGED BTWN APCH AND TWR; BUT MAYBE A SET NUMBER OF ITEMS TO ADVISE A VFR TWR OF ACFT POS. THE ACFT'S CLOSE PROX SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH BEFORE THE ATTACK ON ACR Y AND THE APCH CTLR. DURING THE PERIOD OF TIME WHEN WE WERE ON SHORT FINAL WE WERE UNABLE TO GET A RESPONSE FROM THE TWR CTLR. WE WERE NOT CLRED TO LAND YET AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE EMB120 IN SIGHT FOR THE GAR. DURING THIS SHORT PERIOD OF TIME; I FELT THE SAFETY OF THE FLT WAS COMPROMISED.
