Synopsis

A CHALLENGER CL601ER DURING A HIGH SPD REVERSER TEST RUN AT 100 KTS ON DEPLOYING THE REVERSERS THE ACFT PITCHED UP. IN REGAINING CTL THE ACFT INCURRED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE.

Narrative

PLTS RPTED R THRUST REVERSER TRIED TO STOW DURING LNDG ROLLOUT. MANUFACTURER'S REPRESENTATIVE WAS CONSULTED. HE ADVISED TO TRY TO DUPLICATE THE PROB AND TRY TO DETECT ANY ABNORMAL INDICATIONS. THE THRUST REVERSERS WERE OPERATED SEVERAL TIMES DURING LOW SPD TAX. CLRNC WAS OBTAINED FOR A HIGH SPD TAXI TEST. THE PLT SELECTED 20 DEGS FLAPS AND TRIMMED ELEVATORS FOR TKOF. HE ADVANCED THROTTLES TO TKOF N1 AND ACHIEVED 100 KIAS. WHEN THE THRUST REVERSERS WERE DEPLOYED; THE NOSE OF THE ACFT PITCHED UP. THE PLT PUSHED THE YOKE FORWARD CAUSING THE NOSE TO HIT THE GND; BREAKING THE NOSE LNDG GEAR. THE ACFT ROCKED FROM SIDE-TO-SIDE BREAKING THE R MAIN GEAR AND SKIDDED OFF THE RWY. WING AND FUSELAGE DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE. PERSONNEL ON BOARD SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE FAA CLASSIFIED THIS EVENT AS AN INCIDENT. THE RPTR SAID THIS AIRPLANE HAD NO MAINT HISTORY ON THRUST REVERSER MALFUNCTIONS. THE RPTR SAID THE CL601-3R TYPE HAS NO MAINT HISTORY OF THRUST REVERSER PROBS. THE RPTR SAID THE FAA IS STILL INVESTIGATING BUT HAS SUSPENDED THE PLT FOR 60 DAYS.
