A COMMANDER 114 PVT PLT LANDS HIS ACFT GEAR UP AT SFB; FL.

Narrative

ON MAY/MON/99; I WAS FLYING A COMMANDER 114. I REQUESTED A VECTOR TO AND A LNDG AT SANFORD (SFB) FROM ORLANDO ATC. ATC INSTRUCTED ME TO FLY 180 DEGS AND DSND TO 1500 FT. ATC INFORMED ME THAT THE ARPT WAS 5 MI AT 12:00 O'CLOCK POS AND INSTRUCTED ME TO CHANGE TO TWR FREQ. I CONTACTED TWR AND WAS TOLD I WAS #2 FOR RWY 18L. I TOLD THE TWR I DID NOT HAVE THE ARPT IN SIGHT BUT AS I WAS RPTING THIS I CAME IN VISUAL OF THE ARPT; TOLD THEM SO; AND TURNED TO ALIGN WITH RWY 18L. AT ABOUT 3.5 MI ON FINAL TWR AGAIN TOLD ME THAT I WAS #2 ON RWY 18L AND THERE WAS A PLANE ON A L BASE. I RPTED TO THE TWR THAT I HAD THE TFC IN SIGHT. I WATCHED THE PLANE ON L BASE TURN FINAL AND PROCEEDED TO LAND. AT THE SAME TIME; I SPOTTED AN ADDITIONAL SET OF LIGHTS TO MY R THAT I BELIEVED AT THE TIME TO BE A HELI (IT WAS MOVING VERY SLOWLY). THIS ACFT WAS FLYING APPROX 140 DEGS AND WAS ABOUT A 1/2 MI TO MY R AND A 1/2 MI AHEAD. I IMMEDIATELY INFORMED THE TWR THAT I HAD WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE A HELI IN THE PATTERN WITH ME. THE TWR THEN INFORMED ME IT WAS NOT A HELI AND INSTRUCTED THE OTHER ACFT TO ABORT. THE OTHER ACFT DID CHANGE DIRECTIONS; HOWEVER; THEY CHANGED TO A RWY HEADING. AS STATED BEFORE; THIS ACFT WAS MOVING VERY SLOWLY. I STARTED APPLYING PWR TO ABORT AND GAR WHEN THE OTHER ACFT DID MAKE A L BANK; GOING AWAY FROM THE PATTERN. AT THE TIME THIS OCCURRED WE WERE APPROX 100-150 FT VERT SEPARATION AND APPROX THE SAME HORIZ SEPARATION. ONCE THE OTHER ACFT WAS OUT OF THE WAY; I REALIGNED MY ACFT TO THE RWY AND WAS APPROX 1/2 MI FROM THE THRESHOLD AND AT 1100 FT. I THEN REDUCED PWR TO LAND ON RWY 18L AND IN FACT DID A GEAR-UP LNDG. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND ONLY MINOR ACFT DAMAGE.
