Synopsis

A B737-700 FLC ENTERED A RESTR AREA WHILE NOT ON CLRED RTE DEPARTING BUR.

Narrative

LNAV HAD BEEN ENGAGED AND COUPLED TO AUTOPLT. I LOOKED UP AND XCHKED; FINDING LNAV DISENGAGED AND WE WERE A COUPLE OF MI PAST VOR. I SELECTED NEXT WAYPOINT AND EXECUTED IT; THEN SELECTED LNAV. THE CTLR CLRED US DIRECT HECTOR JUST AS I EXECUTED THE CHANGE. HE SAID WE HAD PASSED THE VOR BY 15 MI AND SLIGHTLY TRANSGRESSED INTO THE RESTR AREA DURING OUR TURN. WE DIDN'T FEEL WE HAD GONE THAT FAR BUT AS HE SAID THERE WAS NO PROB. WE DIDN'T DEBATE THE DISTANCE. WE HAD INDEED MISSED THE TURN. IT WAS MY FAULT; PERIOD. BUT; I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE LACK OF TRAINING PROVIDED BY MY COMPANY. LNAV DIFFERENCES WAS A TAKE-HOME TEST. THERE IS NO STANDARDIZATION IN THE WAY WE OPERATE LNAV OR XCHK EACH OTHER. WE WERE NEW TO THE B737-700 AND RECEIVED 5 1/2 HRS OF CLASSROOM ORIENTATION. THEN 3 MONTHS LATER; 3 TKOFS AND LNDGS; THEN FLEW IT 6 MONTHS LATER (LATE SUMMER 1998). WE FLY IT INFREQUENTLY ALONG WITH THE B737-200; B737-300; AND B737-500. (I FEEL SORRY FOR THE NEW GUYS.) I ALSO FEEL LIKE AN ARMY RANGER SOMETIMES; IN STRESS/SLEEP DEPRIVATION TRAINING. THE PACE HERE AT XXX IS UNBELIEVABLE. IT LEAVES YOU DRAINED; FATIGUED AND ILL-PREPARED TO PERFORM AT A HIGH LEVEL. (CHK OUR RECORD OF EARLY CARDIAC EVENTS.)
