FLT ATTENDANT RPT; B757; SJU-JFK; L ENG PROB; DIVERT TO BDA. FLT CANCELED.

Narrative

HEARD GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM ENG ON L SIDE OF AIRPLANE AFTER TKOF. HEARD MORE GRINDING WHEN DOING THE FIRST BEVERAGE SVC ABOUT 15-20 MINS INTO THE FLT. WE STOPPED THE SVC AND WERE TOLD WE WERE GOING TO LAND IN BDA IN 50 MINS. WE LANDED WITH NO PROBS. WE WERE TOLD NOT TO USE THE L SIDE OF ACFT IF EVACING. LANDED IN BDA. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR SAID THAT THE PLTS NEVER TOLD THEM ANYTHING ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE PROB; EVEN THE NEXT DAY WHEN THEY DEADHEADED TO JFK (AFTER ABANDONING THE PLANE IN BERMUDA). ALL THE CAPT SAID WAS THAT THE WX WAS TOO MARGINAL IN SAN JUAN; SO THEY WOULD CONTINUE ON TO BERMUDA. WHEN THEY GOT OFF THE PLANE; OIL WAS POURING OUT OF THE ENG. THE CABIN CREW DID PREPARE THE CABIN FOR AN EVAC; WHICH WAS NOT NECESSARY. THE RPTR WAS QUITE CRITICAL OF THE PLTS; SAYING THAT THEY MUST HAVE NOT DONE THEIR CHKLIST PROPERLY; BECAUSE THEY ACTED LIKE THEY WERE GUILTY AND WERE COVERING SOMETHING UP. HE FELT LIKE THE FLC WAS VERY UNCOMMUNICATIVE AND NEVER EXPLAINED ANYTHING TO THE CABIN CREW OR PAX.
