PLT OF A TAILWHEEL MOTORIZED GLIDER LOST CTL DURING TKOF ROLL RESULTING IN GOING OFF SIDE OF RWY AND GND LOOPING. THE ACFT LNDG GEAR; PROP AND R WINGTIP WERE DAMAGED.

Narrative

TFC HAD GENERALLY BEEN USING RWY 8; BUT OCCASIONALLY RWY 26. RWY 8 IS FAVORED EVEN WITH LIGHT W WINDS DUE TO LACK OF OBSTRUCTIONS DSNDING TERRAIN TO THE E. WX PARTLY CLOUDY; ISOLATED HIGH BASE SHOWERS; TEMP APPROX 85 DEGS. WINDS WERE LIGHT AND VARIABLE TO LIGHT FROM W; SO TAXIED OUT TO USE RWY 8. TFC WAS USING RWY 8. DURING RUN-UP; NOTED SHOWER TO NW; FEW DROPS ON CANOPY. TAXIED INTO POS ON RWY 8. WINDSOCK INDICATED APPROX 5 KTS FROM W. BEGAN TKOF. HEARD UNICOM NOTE WIND SHIFT/INCREASE IN SPD. DECIDED TO CONTINUE; AS SOCK NEAREST TO ME STILL SHOWED APPROX 5 KTS FROM W. AS SOON AS TAIL CAME UP; GLIDER SWUNG SHARPLY TO L. PULLED STICK BACK TO STOP; FULL R RUDDER; FULL L STUCK; ARRESTED SWING; BUT WOULD NOT GO R. LEFT RWY AT APPROX 30 DEGS OFF COURSE. CUT THROTTLE; APPLIED FULL BRAKE; HEADED FOR TOW PLANES; GAS TRUCK; AND FENCE ROW. WHEN IT BECAME OBVIOUS GLIDER WOULDN'T STOP BEFORE HITTING SOMETHING; NEUTRALIZED AILERONS; AND APPLIED L RUDDER. BY THIS POINT; SPD APPROX 10 KTS. SLID TO STOP AFTER ROTATING 90 DEGS APPROX 25 FT FROM GAS TRUCK/FENCE. GEAR DAMAGE; PROP STRIKE; DAMAGE TO UNDERSIDE OF R WINGTIP. NO INJURIES; NO DAMAGE TO ANYTHING EXCEPT ACFT. OBSERVERS NOTED SUDDEN WIND GUSTS GREATER THAN 15 KTS FROM NW; PROBABLY JUST AFTER BEGINNING OF MY TKOF AND PROBABLY COMING FROM VIRGA/SHOWER JUST TO NW APPROX 3 MI. FACTORS: DENSITY ALT; MAX GROSS TKOF; LOW PWRED ACFT; TAILDRAGGER. PIC HAD BEEN UP SINCE XA00; FLOWN ALREADY ON HOT DAY POOR JUDGEMENT BY PIC. I'VE FLOWN AT BOULDER APPROX 10 YRS. SHOULD HAVE KNOW BETTER THAN TO ATTEMPT TKOF GIVEN CONDITIONS. SAW SHOWER; FEW DROPS ON CANOPY. HEARD UNICOM RESPONSE TO REQUEST BY ANOTHER ACFT FOR CONDITIONS. AT START OF TKOF; SAW ONLY APPROX 5 KTS STRAIGHT ON MY TAIL; BUT THIS CHANGED VERY RAPIDLY. PLTS WERE BUSY TYING DOWN TOW PLANES DURING MY TKOF. THERE HAVE BEEN FAR TOO MANY INCIDENTS OF THIS TYPE. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE.
