Synopsis

A B727 CAPT AND FO EACH SUBMITTED A RPT DESCRIBING HOW A TUG PUSHING THEIR ACFT BACK AT CYYZ ACCIDENTALLY CAUSED A 10 INCH GASH IN THE RADOME.

Narrative

THE TUG THAT WAS PUSHING ACFT CONTACTED THE ACFT NOSE RADOME CAUSING 10 INCH GASH IN THE RADOME. INCIDENT OCCURRED AS TUG WAS ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE ACFT DURING THE PUSHBACK. GND TO COCKPIT COMS SEEMED TO INDICATE THAT THE TUG DOOR SWUNG OPEN DURING TURN POSSIBLY DUE TO JET BLAST FROM A NEARBY ACFT. WE REMAINED PARKED WITH 2 ENGS RUNNING; APU INOP; UNTIL DOOR COULD BE DISLODGED BY GND CREW. APPROX 20 MINS LATER; ACFT WAS TOWED BACK TO GATE AND PAX DISEMBARKED. ENGS REMAINED ON UNTIL EXTERNAL PWR WAS APPLIED AT GATE. EXTERNAL PWR DROPPED OFF-LINE AFTER ENGS WERE SHUT DOWN RESULTING IN DARK ACFT/EMER EXIT LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. EXTERNAL PWR WAS REGAINED WITH LITTLE DELAY AND NO RESULTING COMPLICATIONS FROM ILLUMINATED EMER EXIT LIGHTS. PAX DISEMBARKED WITH NO PROBS THROUGH FORWARD ENTRY DOOR TO JETBRIDGE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 446359: LOCATION: YYZ RAMP. WHILE BEING PUSHED BACK FROM GATE AT YYZ THE L DOOR OF THE TUG WHICH WAS PUSHING THE ACFT SWUNG OPEN AND WEDGED BTWN THE TUG AND THE ACFT. THE TUG THEN TURNED CAUSING THE DOOR TO DENT AND PUNCTURE THE LOWER RADOME AREA OF THE ACFT. WE (THE FLC) WERE UNAWARE OF WHAT HAPPENED UNTIL WE WERE NOTIFIED BY THE GND CREW. WE THEN CONTACTED MAINT AND DISPATCH AND THE ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS.
