FLC OF A SUPER MD80 FAILED TO OBTAIN LNDG CLRNC DUE TO WORKLOAD OF CHANGING RWYS AT THE LAST MIN BY APCH CTL.
DSNDING FROM 11000 FT TO 4000 FT ON THE ARR FROM STONZ AND HAD BEEN TOLD TO EXPECT RWY 35C BY CTLR ON 125.20. CHANGED TO 119.40 AND WAS TOLD RWY 35R. WE CHANGED OUR NAVAIDS AND BRIEFED RWY 35R. GIVEN CLRNC TO DSND TO 4000 FT AND TURN R TO 230 DEGS. COMPLIED WITH CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS. TOLD WE HAD TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK POS; 5 MI GOING TO RWY 35L. WE DID NOT VISUALLY PICK UP THE TFC. SAW AN F100 ON FINAL FOR RWY 35C AND CALLED THAT TFC. TOLD TO TURN R TO 270 DEGS -- TFC NOW AT 2 MI. CLRED VISUAL TO RWY 35C. I RESPONDED WITH 'CLRED VISUAL TO RWY 35R.' I RESPONDED WITH RWY 35R BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE INITIALLY CHKED IN WITH THIS CTLR. CTLR COMES BACK AND SAYS 'NO; THAT'S A VISUAL TO RWY 35C. DO YOU SEE THE TFC YET.' AT THIS POINT; I; THE CAPT; ASSUMED CTL AND TURNED THE ACFT HARD TO THE R AS WE RECEIVED A TFC; TA ON THE TCASII. FINALLY ABLE TO SEE THE TFC GOING TO RWY 35L BUT WAS GIVEN TURN TOO LATE FOR RWY 35C VISUAL TO ROLL OUT ON FINAL FOR RWY 35C. ROLLED OUT 1.5-2 MI IN-TRAIL OF ACFT ON RWY 35L. GET CLRED TO TWR AND TWR CLRS THE ACFT ON FINAL FOR RWY 35L TO LAND ON RWY 35C; THEN CHANGES HIS MIND AND CLRS SAME ACFT TO LAND AGAIN ON RWY 35L. CTLR; 126.55; THEN ASKS US IF WE HAVE RWY 35R IN SIGHT. VISIBILITY IS 15 MI AT LEAST. I RESPOND 'ROGER.' TWR SAYS; 'CLRED FOR VISUAL TO RWY 35R.' WE WERE ABOUT 1200 FT AGL WHEN GIVEN THIS CLRNC. LIKE AN IDIOT; I ACCEPTED THE CLRNC. TURNED R; TUNED IN NAVAID AND DIDN'T GO TO TWR 127.55 UNTIL ON A 1.5 MI. HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS. WE LANDED SAFELY. HERE'S THE BAD NEWS. I DID NOT ACCOMPLISH THE LAST 5 ITEMS ON THE BEFORE LNDG CHKLIST BECAUSE WE WERE WORKING SO HARD TO GET ON THE GND. COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE ROCK IF THIS HAD BEEN A WET RWY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I BELIEVE I COULD HAVE LANDED GEAR UP. THIS WAS ALL DONE WITH A NEW FO ON HIS FIRST IOE TO BOOT. HINDSIGHT SAYS; EITHER LAND ON RWY 35C OR GO AROUND. THE TWR CTLR WAS VERY UPSET THAT AN ACFT HAD BEEN CLRED TO THE INSIDE RWY BY APCH.
