Synopsis

A COMMERCIAL RATED PLT FLYING A C208 NEAR MKK; HI; MANEUVERED HIS ACFT TO AVOID A PERCEIVED THREAT FROM ANOTHER ACFT.

Narrative

I WAS ON A VISUAL APCH TO JHM AND DSNDING OUT OF 7000 FT WHEN TFC WAS ISSUED TO ME AT 12 O'CLOCK 5 MI. THIS ACFT WAS A C402 OF A LCL AIRLINE; HE WAS AT 6500 FT IN CRUISE. NEITHER OF US COULD SEE EACH OTHER. TFC AGAIN ISSUED AT 12 O'CLOCK 3 MI. AT THIS TIME I WAS AT 6700 FT AND KNOWING THAT A CONFLICT WAS LESS THAN 1 MIN AWAY; I STOPPED MY DSCNT VOLUNTARILY; SO I WOULD NOT HAVE A MIDAIR COLLISION. MY INTENT WAS TO PASS OVER HIM AND BEGIN EVASIVE ACTION TO THE R (S). JUST AS I THOUGHT THAT; THE C402 PLT STATED HE WAS DEVIATING TO THE R (N). I THEN STATED THAT I WAS ALSO DEVIATING TO MY R (S). THESE ACTIONS RESOLVED THE CONFLICT. BUT I THINK THE CTLR FELT HE WOULD GET IN TROUBLE SO HE LASHED OUT ON THE AIR; ASKING ME WHY I STOPPED MY DSCNT. I THINK HE PLANNED ON ME PASSING UNDER THE TFC WHEN REALLY I WOULD HAVE PASSED HIM AT THE SAME ALT. IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE CTLR FOR A VECTOR SOONER. THE OTHER ACFT WAS VFR SO THERE WAS NO VIOLATION (I DON'T THINK SO AT LEAST) BUT IT BECAME A LITTLE DANGEROUS NONETHELESS.
