Synopsis

AN MD88 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE WRONG MAIN TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY INSTALLED IN #2 POS L MAIN GEAR.

Narrative

DURING A MAIN LNDG GEAR TIRE CHANGE ON ACFT XYZ (MD88) ON NOV/XA/99; THE WRONG PART NUMBER WAS INSTALLED. THE PART NUMBER INSTALLED WAS FOR AN MD80 ACFT. PART NUMBER INSTALLED WAS WXXX; AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN VYXXX. THE PROB AROSE WHEN; DURING A SVC CHK; THE #2 MAIN TIRE WAS WRITTEN UP AS BEING WORN. I ELECTED TO PERFORM THE TIRE CHANGE. I LOOKED UP THE PROC TO REMOVE/REPLACE THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY. I READ THROUGH THE MAINT MANUAL; LOOKING MOSTLY FOR THE TORQUES OF THE AXLE NUT. BEING THAT I HAVE REPLACED NUMEROUS TIRES ON DC9'S AND THAT I HELPED WITH MD80'S; I FELT FAIRLY SECURE WITH THE PROC. I DID NOT VIEW THE IPC FOR PROPER PART NUMBERS; BECAUSE I FELT COMFORTABLE WITH THE SIZE DIFFERENCES BTWN DC9 ACFT AND MD80 ACFT. I THEN WENT TO WHERE THE TIRES ARE LOCATED; WHICH IS ON A TIRE CART; AND SAW THE NOTICEABLY LARGER TIRE; WHICH I BELIEVED WAS THE PROPER TIRE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THERE BEING DIFFERENT TIRES FOR THE -80 AND -88 ACFT; AND ON THE TIRE CART WERE 3 SLOTS FOR TIRES -- 1 FOR DC9-10; 1 FOR DC9-30; AND 1 FOR BOTH MD80'S OR MD-88'S. I THEN INSTALLED THE -80 TIRE ON THE ACFT; WHICH FIT NORMALLY. I HAD NO PROBS WITH INSTALLATION. THE DAY AFTER INSTALLATION; ON A CHK; IT WAS NOTICED BY THE -80 PRINTED ON IT THAT IT WAS THE IMPROPER TIRE. IT WAS THEN REMOVED; AND THE PROPER TIRE WAS INSTALLED.
