C150 INSTRUCTIONAL FLT IYK. STUDENT LEARNS ABOUT TOW BRAKES THE HARD WAY. ACFT AND TXWY BENT.

Narrative

STUDENT PLT WAS PRACTICING NORMAL TKOFS AND LNDGS WITH INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE. SEVERAL TKOFS AND LNDGS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED WITHOUT INCIDENT. NORMAL TOUCHDOWN MADE WITH 10 DEG FLAPS SETTING AND APCH SPD OF 75 MPH AT XA45 ON DEC/XA/99 ON RWY 33 AT IYK. ACFT SETTLED ONTO RWY 33 WITHOUT ANY PROB. INSTRUCTOR INFORMED STUDENT TO BEGIN THINKING ABOUT USE OF THE BRAKES TO SLOW FOR EXITING RWY 33. STUDENT APPLIED MEDIUM TO STRONG PRESSURE ON TOE BRAKES; BUT APPLIED UNEVEN BRAKING WITH TOE BRAKES DURING LNDG GND ROLLOUT DECELERATION; TO SLOW ACFT TO EXIT RWY. ACFT MOVED R OF CTRLINE; TOWARD R-HAND SIDE OF RWY 33. R TIRE SKIDDED. INSTRUCTOR DIRECTED STUDENT IMMEDIATELY TO RELEASE TOE BRAKES; ROLL STRAIGHT ON RWY 33; TO STOP THE SKIDDING MOTION AND TO AVOID SIDELOADING THE ACFT; BUT WAS UNABLE TO STEER ACFT CLR OF TXWY MARKER SIGN B2. ACFT ROLLED NOSEWHEEL FIRST; THROUGH MARKER SIGN B2 AND WAS STOPPED JUST PAST SIGN. ACFT ENG STOPPED. SIGN DAMAGED. NO INJURY TO STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR. INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT SECURED ACFT SYS AND EXITED ACFT TO PUSH AIRPLANE BACK TO FBO. A TELEPHONE RPT WAS IMMEDIATELY MADE TO THE FBO OWNER OF ACFT AND THE IYK ARPT MGR. WX: SKY CLR AND CALM SURFACE WINDS. NO PERSONAL INJURIES PREVENTIVE MEASURE: THOROUGH PREBRIEFING ON USE OF TOE BRAKES. MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CTL OF ACFT; CLOSELY MONITORING STUDENT ACTIONS. ALLOW NO DEV FROM ROLLING OUT; DECELERATION ON RWY CTRLINE UNTIL ACFT SLOWS TO SAFE AND SLOW TAXI SPD PRIOR TO USING ANY BRAKES. PRACTICE TAXIING WITH STUDENT AND SHOW EFFECTIVE USE OF BRAKES WITHOUT DEVIATING R OR L OF TAXI GND TRACK ALONG YELLOW TXWY MARKINGS AND RWY CTRLINES (DASHED WHITE MARKINGS).
