Synopsis

AN EMBRAER 145 ON LNDG ROLLOUT AND DURING UNREVERSING THE L ENG SPOOLED DOWN CAUSED BY THE FADEC COMMANDING TOO LOW A THRUST LEVEL.

Narrative

I HAD JUST LANDED THE EMBRAER 145 REGIONAL TWIN JET WITH AE3007A ENGS. TO SLOW ACFT; I USED FULL REVERSE ON BOTH ENGS. I HAD JUST COME OUT OF REVERSE AND HEADED FOR THE HIGH SPD LANE. THE CAPT SAID SOMETHING WHICH I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND. I GAVE FULL CTL TO THE CAPT SO HE USED THE TILLER AND EXITED ON THE HIGH SPD. TWR SAID 'HOLD SHORT OF ACTIVE PARALLEL RWY.' WE STOPPED AND I ASKED THE CAPT WHAT HE SAID; AND HE SAID I HAD JUST LOST AN ENG ON LNDG. HE SAID 'IT WAS NOT BIG DEAL; IT HAD OCCURRED TO HIM APPROX 2 WKS AGO.' HE LATER SAID APPARENTLY AFTER YOU COME OUT OF REVERSE THAT WHEN THE ENGS ARE AT A LOW PWR THRUST; THEY MAY FAIL. WE CONTACTED MAINT VIA THE RADIO AND GNDED THE ACFT XYZ. RELATED INFO ON JUL/MON/98: I PERFORMED A TEST FLT WITH MY CAPT AT XXX AT THE HVY MAINT FACILITY AND PRIOR TO THE TEST FLT THE HEAD A&P FOR ACR SAID THE ACFT WE WOULD TEST FLY (XYZ) HAD HAD AN ENG FAILURE DURING HIS TAXI. THE A&P SAID ALL THEY COULD FIND WERE SOME BUNDLED WIRES ON THE ENG THAT HAD FAILED. THE TEST FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED BY TALKING WITH OTHER PLTS THAT ACR HAS HAD APPROX 15 ENG FAILURES INFLT OR ON THE GND. SOME WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE BREAKDOWN OF A CARBON RING/SEAL IN THE ENG; AND MANY OTHER INFLT WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRONIC CTL UNITS WHICH CAUSED A FALSE ENG COMMAND SHUTDOWN. RIGHT NOW I BELIEVE WE ARE USING VERSION 6.1 FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRON CTL ON SOME ENGS DUE TO THE NUMEROUS ENG SHUTDOWNS. IT WAS RUMORED AT ONE TIME THAT THE FAA WAS CLOSE TO GNDING THE ENTIRE FLEET OF 145'S. I FURTHER BELIEVE THE FAA IS WITHHOLDING LIFE THREATENING INFO FROM THE PUBLIC AND THE PLTS WHO FLY THE ACFT. I BELIEVE THERE ARE ABOUT NOW 200 IN PRODUCTION AND USE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT IS PWRED WITH 2 ALLISON AE3007A ENGS WITH FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRONIC ENG CTL UNITS. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG SPOOL DOWN WAS CAUSED BY A FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRONIC CTL COMMAND OF TOO LOW AN ENG IDLE AND THE ENG JUST QUIT. THE RPTR STATED THE FREQ OF ENG FAILURES FROM SEVERAL CAUSES BUT MAINLY FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRONIC CTL COMMANDED SHUTDOWNS ARE ALARMING AND NEED CORRECTION. THE RPTR SAID SEVERAL MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH NO POSITIVE RESULT. THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH ANY FULL AUTH DIGITAL ELECTRONIC CTL OVERRIDE.
