Synopsis

ACR FLC EXPERIENCES TRACK DEV ON SID AT MDW.

Narrative

DEPARTED OUT OF MDW ON FLT TO DTW. FO FLYING DEP. TKOF ON RWY 31C; CLRNC TO TURN TO 090 DEG HDG; MAINTAIN 3000 FT. SID SPECIFIES REMAIN WITHIN 4 DME OF LOC (109.9) START TURN ABOVE 1300 FT. TKOF UNEVENTFUL; BUT FO DELAYED TURN TO 090 DEGS. I DIRECTED HIM TO START TURN; THEN TWR DIRECTED US TO START TURN. FO FINALLY STARTED TURN AT APPROX 1900 FT. HOWEVER; AS WE STARTED TO LEVEL OFF AT 3000 FT; HE BEGAN DECREASING HIS BANK ANGLE. I ONCE AGAIN DIRECTED HE CONTINUE HIS TURN. HIS AIRSPD INCREASED TO 250 KTS AND WE WENT BEYOND THE 4 DME RESTR OUT TO 5.9 DME. DEP ASKED IF WE HAD A PROB AND TOLD THEM WE WERE IN THE TURN. THE FO'S UNFAMILIARITY WITH FLYING THE B737-200 CONTRIBUTED TO HIS POOR XCHK AND POOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE DEP PROC. WE HAD DISCUSSED THE RESTRS OF THE SID AT LENGTH PRIOR TO ENG START. I THOUGHT HE UNDERSTOOD THEM WELL ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO FLY IT CORRECTLY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 463560: I BELIEVE THE HIGH WORKLOAD COMBINED WITH NOT BEING FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA CONTRIBUTED A GREAT DEAL TO THIS INCIDENT.
